I have a 351m and i bought a 351c intake with spacers and i went to put that on and stock distributor is in the way so being hte person that i am said eh well take it off right? well no it wont come out i soaked it over night in penatration lube and was wackin it with the hammer slowly turning iot but no good wont come out.. help please do i heat it up or what?
I have had the same problem in the past, this is common with these motors because you have aluminum and cast in contact with each other. The trick I learned is to mix equal parts of marvels mystery oil and brake fluid together and let it sit for a day. Together the chemically react with the aluminum corrosion. Heat won't work becaues the aluminum will expand further and faster than the cast and make it more stuck.
They can be a real pain. Consider a couple other parts before going much further. I'm told an extension is needed for the distributor when using spacer plates and a Cleveland intake. Shazam may advise on this, available from http://www.pricemotorsport.com/.
Keep working the dizzy back and forth until it moves by hand. Don't try to lift up before it goes side to side OK. Working back and forth while you lift is the best way.
If it only lifts out a small amount, your oil pump drive is probably stuck to the distributor. It uses a retaining clip to keep it from being pulled up and can only be accessed from the oil pan side.
Usually the clip isn't that strong. If you can break it loose, it just falls in the pan. The hard part will be aligning the shaft with the oil pump again without pulling the pan off. If it comes to that, buy a new drive, preferably chrome moly, they aren't that expensive.
My vote is to use heat in a localized area (be careful!). The aluminum may expand faster, and that is OK, because the expansion/cooling cycle will help break the corrosion free.
this is the same problem im having! i need to time the motor and the dist wont turn or come out or anything. i've soaked the thing for 2 days know! i've beat on it with a hammer to with no luck. i'll try the mystery oil and brake fluid combo though
I had this problem a few years ago and wrapped one end of a come-a-long around the distributor and hooked the other to a beam in the ceiling. I ended up jacking the front end of the truck up in the air by the distributor before it broke loose. Worked fine, although I venture to say I'm lucky I didn't break it off. cleaned the block and distributor real good with emery paper before putting it back in.
I have used a product called Magna-Lube on ditributors in two trucks now, with very good results. It is a teflon-based lube, and doesn't evaporate. I think even smearing Vasaline on the dizzy would help keep it from getting stuck.
