Oilpan drain plug location

I have a 390 in a '75 F250 CS, 2 wheel drive, and I find changing the oil an exercise in frustration. First of all the oilpan drain plug is above the crossmember so it's awkward to reach. Then when you get it out it spills all over the crossmember and steering linkage making a mess. Inevitably some of it misses the drain pan and gets on the ground or floor. The filter is not much better, it's easy to reach but it drips onto the front of the crossmember adding to the cleanup. I've tried using trays etc. but they get in the way.

An novel ideas on how to deal with this?

All,
I have owned a few trucks with 302,351M and 400.
They all have this arrangement. It must be the second worst design of these trucks. I usually just throw down some cat litter or sand ahead of time. There is really no way to direct or route the oil into a container.

I wedge a funnel over the hole with the bottom of the funnel cut open to let more through and direct it anywhere I want to.

Might want to look into the FRAM Sure Drain Part # SD1.

www.fram.com

Hope this helps...

I had a piece of 1-1/2", if I remember right, plastic pipe cut to wedge in there on my 400. I could reach thru the pipe to pull the plug with an extension. All of the oil from the pan drained thru the pipe. The filter just made a mess but a rag draped over the crossmember helps. When I pulled the pan on my 400 I moved the drain plug to the RF corner. I had to re-contour the bottom of the pan tho to make it drain right.

I thought about taking the pan off to do a mod like that too, but as you say the front is higher than the back. Does the pan on this truck come off without jacking up the motor? Looks pretty tight.

I have a "dust pan" style catcher that slides up on the cross-member under the hole,
this allows me to use a wrench real close & directs the oil into a regular drain pan

I re-contoured the pan bottom with a torch to soften and anneal the metal, ball pein hammer, and a sandbag to make it drain properly. The oil pump pickup was repositioned also. Since I did not have to raise the truck or anything to change the oil it worked out great. With the plug in the front corner all I have to do is reach in from the front!

Do I have to lift the motor to get the pan off, or is there enough room with the motor on the mounts?
Thanks for the suggestions.

You have to lift the engine to remove the pan on a 2WD. Only mess with the pan If you are performing some other task like a gasket, bearing, seal, or pump replacement.

If you get a pan from a car you don't have to worry about making a new hole or reforming the pan, they already have the left front corner drain location.

To clean up concrete, you might try "Swab" from Gunk, or Castrol Super Clean. The Swab is alkaline salts so don't use it near grass. It is very effective.

i was in AutoZone today and found this quick connect oil plug and it's like the air hose connectors. I almost bought one but being on a budget set me back. it was only $15 and i has the sconnector that goes on the pan and the connector that drains it with a 6 inch hose on it that could be easily extended if desired check it out they should have these at any auto parts store around. except you mom and pop auto stores. they usually don't carry the dumb odd thngs that have no use. lol. hope this helps. i don't see why you couldn't just use a regular air hose connector on it anyways. air is thinner than oil. Just My $0.02.

You would need a way to re-thread the air coupler to match the oil plug which is 1/2"-20 if I remember right.

well i guess the easiest thing to do would buy the oil drain connector i saw at the parts store. Cheap and easy and seems to be durable enough.
