ok 76 F250 supercab camper special 2wd 390ci(maybe?).
I went to change the oil for the first time on my truck yesterday, and guess what...
The oil drain plug is located directly above a frame crossmember.
Is this how it's supposed to be? I have to rig up some sort of deflector to get the oil to drain into my catch basin. Either that, or let the oil drain down onto the crossmember and ooze out all over the floor (looks like PO prefered this approach... friggin mess).
I suspect an engine swap from a different model... possibly a 4x4.
Any ideas? How easy will it be to find the right pan, and how easy to swap. The swap would probably require the removal of the engine, yes?
my truck is the same way. i have a 460 and it is a pain in the a** to change the oil. i will swap the pan. i think the guys are right probably a car engine.
There is a kit out there that will let you convert from a front sump oil pan which mainly was present in cars. Like my 460 for instance. Which still has the front sump and when i change the oil, well pain in the but doesn't cover it. The kit will let you convert to a rear sump oil pan making changing oil a lot easier.
Well I guess I'll make do with it. Might try the weld in valve thing, but how hard is it (if possible) to remove the oil pan without taking the engine out?
I know it isn't possible with most vehicles, unless you drop the whole suspension out from under the car.
Will also change the oil and see if it takes 5 or 6 quarts. Will let y'all know.
When I bought my 77' 4x4 f150 it had a 460 in it. It came from a Lincoln land yauht and had the front sump oil pan. I could deal with the oil change problem but it hit the front diff. I would get aggrasive off roading and when I jumped the truck it would bend the bottom of the oil pan upwards on landing. It would bend in more and more until it started to bend the oil pickup spout and drop oil pressure. I could drop the oil pan but it would not clear the oil pump and pickup to come out because it hit the top of the diff. I had to reach into the half dropped pan and remove the oil pump to remove the pan. A pain in the a..! I could then knock the pan back out from the inside with a hammer and straighten the bent pickup spout. I did about twice before I finally found the conversion kit. It moved the lower sump pan to the rear and came with an extended pickup spout to reach back and down into the pan. Solved every thing. I could even get for air then with no problem.
My plug is the same way. Its over the crossmember So i have to lift the truck and put the pan as close as possible. I know this doesn't help but just watch your eyes when changing your oil
I can't believe they built the trucks like that. I have a 360 in my '77 2wd. When I changed the oil, I figured the motor had come from a 4x4. Here I thought only GM did dumb stuff like that...

had same problem when I stuck the last 400 in my truck it was from a liclon kept hitting the diff... I just added 4-6 inches of lift that fixed it
