Okay, I am getting ready to install both pair of my MB Quart 6-1/2" Premier speakers, and I need some "professional" help from you bunch of fun lovin, screw drivin, amp lovin men.
The speakers have tweeters, and the "factory" cars I have owned have the tweeters on the dash, or "A" column. But the stereo guy doing the install said "technically, the tweeters should be mounted lower than the speakers".
I've never seen tweeters mounted in a lower location than the speakers... I've even seen a setup where the tweeters were on the sides of the dome lamp. They sounded good.
what are they going in? make sure you mount them the same distance from your ears as the woofers are or there will be a delay in the sound coming from the speakers. also i wouldn't point the tweeters directly at you or they will sound over bearing.
They are going in my 2005 F-250 CC. The Subwoofer is the StealthBox located in the console between the front buckets. It is a 10" JL Audio Sub, powered be a JL Slash 250/1 amp, and the sub fires "down". I am only using the sub to provide a more balanced tone, not to get the system to "boom".
The speakers are powered by a JL slash 300/4 amp.
It sounds like the tweeters will be on the doors then, but higher than the speakers? I am using Dynamat on all 4 four doors, even though the back speakers are on the pillars on the side of the seats. I may end up driving "most" of the time with the seats folded down. Since it is only me driving out of town, no biggy.
You guys are great, THANKS again for all the help.
I know you guys have seen the pods for guages and what not that goes on the door pillar. Has anyone ever heard of someone mounting tweets in one of those, but on each side?
in my 99 i have my tweets mounted behind my side mirrors. but i am also running a pioneer premier 960mp with my components active (every woofer and tweeter has a channel on my amp) and running time alignment. i would recomend right above the woofer or mount it right next to the woofer on a mounting plate. that should get it fairly close and sounding good.
If the '05 is the same interior or similar to the '99, you may think about putting them in the snap cover that covers up the mirror bolts, as soon as mine arrive, that is where they will be located, however one problem I forsee is the depth/size of the tweeter may inhibit locating them in this location.
I cant quite say anything about mounting the tweets below your midranges, I can understand why but I know I havent normalyl seen in and my installer doesnt normally recommend that. I can however say, dont make a few specific mistakes, DO NOT mount the tweeters too close to your ears, I have 158.7 decibels of bass in my expedition and it doesnt hurt nearly as bad as my brother's bronco where I made the mistake of mounting the tweeters on the top of the A-pillar, your ears are very sensitive to treble and it can be very damaging very quickly. Generally the best way to mount tweeters is to mount them as close as possible to the midrange, this will give you the best imaging, is this the only way, no, is this the easiest with the best results, yes. I have seen people mount tweeters in a-pillar guage pods, pretty cool looking (you have to be pretty good with abs and bondo to make it work), but it doesnt sound so great, poor imaging and piercing treble.
It's like my prom dance I went to last year, I walked by the tower speakers which were friggin loud, and about went deaf from the tweeters, but when I would be across the room it didn't hurt because the sounds mixed. Bad parallel but maybe it gets the point across.
I personally followed JL Audio's guidelines and mounted the tweeters within 8 inches of the midrange near the door handles. It sounds the best there to me.
A rule of thumb for obtaining the best tweeter placement is to temporarily mount the tweeters in various locations using dbl sided velcro. Then decide which location sounds best to YOU.
Here is a quote from Scott Buwulda, a world renown car audio expert, regarding the placement of the midrange and tweeters in close proximity of each other in order for them to work properly...
"You put the tweeter wherever it works, wherever it sounds good. I found it works exceptionally well with a high crossover frequency on the A pillar; it helps to widen and deepen the stage. About 5 or 6 years ago, if you had tweeters in your A pillars, you were scorned. Even today, people will email me, saying, 'I don't know how your car could possibly image or stage with the tweeter so close to your ear.'" http://www.m-emag.com/article.asp?se...ber=4&preview=

This is a great place for them in the 05. I worked with my local shop and they are molding them into these pieces in my 05. They are the right level and should work well there.
