Can anyone actually sing?

Did you guys see Saturday Night Live last week? They had some young pop singer on there, she was beebopping around the stage with the mic still at her side when all of a sudden the lyrics started playing over the speakers. She got all embarassed and ran off stage. I feel sorry for the kids growing up these days, when they grow up they can look back to their favorite bands and realize the lead singers couldn't even write or SING their own songs. You see a live show today, and if they don't lip sync they sound absolutely NOTHING like the album. We should outlaw this BS.

Ah man you guys are so funny. Some girl? It was ashlee simpson, come on now get into it. Ashlee and her band got alittle mixed up about what song they were going to play and he back-up vocals were playing. That's her on the track but they do that to provide a more full sound because it can sound empty if you don't have a really strong voice. It was kinda funny tho.

It varies. Naturally, being a singer and guitar player, I prefer an artist to sing live and can tell immediately when they aren't really singing.

I remember the SuperBowl Halftime show two years ago when No Doubt performed a song (Just a Girl) and then did a duet where they backed Sting (Message in a Bottle). Both songs were done totally live and were great performances. The other artist who was performing (who I don't remember) was obviously lip-syncing and the performance was rather stale.

In many cases when the performance is during a live broadcast, the producers want the songs synced so they have more control over vocal content and time. I'm guessing that with No Doubt's psuedo-punk background, they stood their ground and insisted on performing live, promising to stay within the time limit.

There is a requirement, in Europe, that all artists performing live, must perform live. It would be a good idea if that ideal were to be required here also. Often singers are not performing the songs we assume they are singing at the time we hear it.. Another sad fact about today's singers is that so very few of them would be able to be heard in an old fashioned theater - I once had the misfortune of hearing a popular singer singing live - I was back stage, and the audio system failed, on speakers, but remained on the bands headsets.... The singer had no idea that she was singing unpluged, and I, from 12 feet away, could not hear her voice, only her totally uncontrolled breathing. Her mics were turned up all the way, just to hear her mouse quiet voice - and she is a millionaire.. Crazy.

I could live with that law...

I remember when I used to perform live with in a band. I was constantly telling the sound guy to pull the vocals out of the monitor mix. I sing much better than I play guitar and if I heard my own voice in the monitors, it made me sing softer and distracted me from my guitar playing - and considering I have to pay attention to playing guitar but can sing on auto-pilot, that was a bad thing!

Well, I can sing pretty well. Not to say anyone wants to listen to me... I can sing country music really well, not to brag or anything. Too bad I'm not famous. I'd do you proud.

I wish I was a sweet singer. Right now I'm really into Gavin Degraw. I mean I sing to myself alot and some people say I am good, but I don't think so. I think I should just practice and try to find my style. I guess it runs in the family too.

Occasionally I can hit that "perfect" sound, but that mostly in the shower.

Actually, I play more music than I sing.

I once heard a raw track of Madonna's vocals. Awful--and I'm being generous. Much of the so-called music today is so digitally manipulated that any of us could be "singers." It's all about marketing....

I sure as heck wouldn't try out for American Idol, but I'm not that bad of a singer. I don't write often, but I write fairly well too.
