I think I have found my favorite blues recording. I'm a Blues fan, and I'm lucky enough to live in the Live music Capitol of the World :-) I can see great live music any night of the week.
Anyway, the song I'm nominating for best blues recording is: The thrill is Gone, performed by BB King and Gary Moore Live. I'm not sure what album it came from. Gary Moore is one of my favorite guitarists, and I think very unrecognized as one of the all time greats. In this recording they play off of each other and it's simply awesome. It's so fun to listen to the 2 different styles on the same licks. Sometimes it's subtle differences, sometimes it's "in your face" differences.
If anybody knows what album or venue this is from, that would be cool to know.
I Ain't Superstitious by Willie Dixon, is my fav blues song. I have the original "Thrill is Gone" by BB King, sorry I can't help you with the version you're looking for.
I like Muddy Waters as well. Paul Rodgers of Bad Comapny fame, made a Muddy Waters tribute album with a mix of some of the best rock guitarists. Slash, Neal Schon, Jeff Beck, and a bunch of other big time gutar players.
If you like your blues with a little edge, you gotta have this album.
I think my favorite blues song is anything by SRV. I got the cd "Blues at Sunrise" and love it! Great for listening to on long road trips. Too bad he died at the height of his career. Another fav of mine is- whether or not you agree about it being 'blues'- is ZZ Top's version of "Waitin' for the Bus All Day/ Jesus Just Left Chicago"
T-Birds, that's Stevie's older brother Jimmy on guitar.
Let me tell you a little story of how cool it is to live in The Live Music Capitol of the World.
Monday night a few years back. Me and some coworkers go to Antones to see the house band and Jimmy Vaughan. Already this is a pretty serious show for Monday night, right.
While we are there, Kim Wilson, lead singer for the TBirds shows up nad gets on stage. So, we're pretty much watching the TBirds. A bit more jamming, then Billy Givens from ZZ Top shows up and jams with them...
It's crazy loud in some of the clubs (I may actually be passing that point where "If it's too old, you're tool loud". I love music and I want to appreciate it nto my old age :-) You might even see me with plugs at the concerts.
Anyway, it's the outdoor shows that have been quieted down. It's almost too quiet at some of the outside shows, unless you're right up on the stage.
I have to chime in here and say stu37d is on the money with SRV. I missed going to the concert at Alpine Valley here in Wisconsin when Stevie did his last show. I had planned on going only to succumb to a family reunion on my wifes side. Boy does that suck. We could only imagine how great a show it was with SRV and Eric Clayton. There are many great blues artists but they just don't get the recognition they deserve.
