Winter's almost here. Can anyone recommend a good winter boot? It's got to be able to do anything and everything (ice, snow, slush, water, etc.) and keep the toes warm and dry. What do the Marine's use?
I don't think you want to know what the Marine's use. Their equipment isn't always I guess you could say "good". Wife was in the corps and in supply. I would recomend checking out Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops. You don't have to buy from them but they usually have a good description, temp range, usage listing with each boot. On the net I think they even have customer testamonials and pro reviews. Been a while since shopping for boots.
I have bought a couple of great boots on Ebay. Type in Goretex or Gortex into the search engine and you will get a huge list of boots and clothing. The boots I got, were both initially sold for over $180 new, and I got them in excellent condition for less than 30 bucks each pair.
The Carolina insulated boots work and wear well for general use.
If you need totally waterproof AND warm for to deal with slush, snow, and ice, I found the totally rubber enclosed type boot from L.L. Bean (pac boot) with the insulated silver bootie works well and will keep your feet from freezing.
Though you have to change socks every 3-4 fours if you work hard because your feet will sweat inside them since they are all rubber and do not breathe well. Though the removable insole they give the boot which acts like a raised platform on nubbles works well enough to give your feet some breathing room.
It is more a hunting, snowmobile, snow removal type boot then a working boot because they do rip easy enough in construction work.
I'd recommend a pair of Columbia's. I have ones called the Accelerators, I think... they're sturdy, super warm, and very very waterproof. Maybe try searching on their website.
In Canada's oilpatch where the temperature will sometimes hover around the
-38 to -41 area for a month at a time , the boot of choice are Sorel Skagways which are the top of their line and rated for -60 degrees.
The people who live and work in the Arctic here all wear these and they are available in both regular and safety ratings .
I'm not sure who distributes these in the US but do know they are available as I had some employees from Texas and Oklahoma that were already familiar with them when they moved north to work the patch in Alberta .
Keep em warm boys , they have to last a lifetime .
The best place I've seen for outdoor equipment, including footwear, is a place called REI. They sell the Sorels mentioned above along with Columbia and Merrell and a few other high quality brands. You should be able to find something good for around $100.
Their website is www.rei.com and they may have a retail store in your area. They seem to be more popular in the North West but they have two of them here in Northern Virginia where I live.
I have a pair of Halls 12" linesmans boots. They retail for a couple hundred bucks actually, but I got em for like 85 bucks at a Rocky Outlet store. they're Gore-Tex, with a Vibram sole, nice big heel on em. Also steel toe. I wear em constantly, that or my Cats. They are holding up pretty well, and nice and warm in the winter.
I've got a pair of Sorel boots that I bought in '83 They are as warm and dry as the day i bought them. They've outlasted 5 snwomobiles, two motorcycles, 3 atv's
They are practically formal wear in this part of the country
