I have a 1991 F150 with 5.0 motor and auto transmission. Sometimes but not always the transmission shifts with a hard jerk from lst to 2nd etc. This does not happen all the time and can not determine any certain time that it may happen. Truck only has 70,000 miles and has been well taken care of. Filter and fluid have been changed. Any ideas as to what may cause this?
I just noticed that no one had replied to this post - do a search for "harsh (or hard) 1-2 shift" from the bar at the top of the page and you will get more info than you can absorb. Probably the reason no one replied is that there are so many causes from tuneup to loss of power external to transmission plus a whole bunch of transmission related problems. Possibly the first thing I would try is to disconnect battery and let computer relearn the engine - driving scenario from scratch. this will clear any codes stored which can be good or bad, but if you have a recurring problem it will re-store the code for whatever is still happening rather than chasing codes that may have been stored for a long time. You can pull the codes for info (search for codes as above) but I sure wouldn't start rep;acing parts based on the old codes until you try clearing the memory. Sometimes just odd driving situations will put bad learning inputs into the computer. Good luck!
