P/S pump removal

How do you get the power steering pump off of the mounting bracket on a '90 5.0 ?
I tried to loosen the pulley using an allen wrench but it didn't want to budge with a reasonable amount of force. I thought I'd ask before I use an unreasonable amount of force!!

Thanx

Removal of the powersteering pump pulley requires a special pulley removal tool. If you have Autozone parts stores in your area you might be able to borrow one from them. Or, a good old fashion parts house should be able to remove it for you when you purchase a new pump. These pullers can be purchased starting at about $30.00 from a number of different sources.

Thanks Mark
I have a couple of different pullers. Is the pulley a straight press fit or do I still need to unscrew the centre section first?
Thanks for the advise I will look into what type of puller is required. I'm sure I would have damaged it if I continued.

Press fit. Push on, pull off.

Guitar Stitch is correct about press on pull off. Go to ebay and do a search for "pulley remover" and you should get several hits on the correct type of pullers. I got my off ebay for $16.00 plus shipping. It is not the best quality but as little as I need one it works just fine. Snap On Tools sells a great one for about $120.00. Check out the link below.

i tried a normal 3 finger puller at first but it didn't work. i bought a puller from pep boys and it came off in about a minute. buy an installer as well. you can sometimes buy the puller/installer together.

Just buy the tool from Autozone/Advance etc. If you want, you can always return it after you're done. While it seems disingenuous, you gotta do what you gotta do. Anyway, using any other type of puller will be ridiculously frustrating and most likely will damage it. Spend the extra 20 dollars and buy a new high pressure hose and return hose as well and you will have a leak free unit for many years.

The Canadian Tire store here has a loaner tool program so I was able to use the proper puller. This one was an installer as well. The only problem was that out of the three that were available, none were complete so the guy at the parts counter had to put one together with bits from the other two. Once I got the thing home I noticed that it wouldn't go together very well so I had to spend some time with a tap reshaping the mangled threads. I guess everyone just abuses rental stuff and tosses it back to the store without a second thought. So take the some time to check things over at the counter before taking it home. It will save you time in the long run.
Oh yeah, it worked like a charm once I cleaned it up.
Any time I borrow something I like to return it in better shape than when I got it. Shouldn't make a difference if it's from the store or from a buddy. Think of the next guy.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
