Why don't you try Robert Oppenheimer? There's loads written about him, and he was a very interesting person. He also worked miracles helping pull the Manhattan project together and keep it on target. You should definitely be able to get at least ten pages on him, and that would not include much of what could be left out.
Bronco Billy, if you aren't fully committed yet, I would STRONGLY urge you to consider one of these gentlemen whose deeds were of the appropriate time - there were a few.
Actually, I think it behooves all of us to occasionally peruse this list and remember them.
Gene Roddenberry served as a B-17 bomber pilot during WWII, and then went on to become a pilot for Pan Am, a police officer, and then a film writer & producer. His final carreer work had alot to do with some of the most popular television series ever produced..... I think that a paper written about this guy would be interesting, and get you a good grade. "Dragnet", "Have Gun,Will Travel", "Star Trek", and "The Lieutenant" are samples of his writing & producing work. I have to admit it was my own curiosity about Star Trek that revealed to me that its creator was a WWII veteran, and had also worked on other shows I had watched as a kid. Good luck with your paper! (My mom was a college english professor with master degrees in english & foreign languages, she loved her work while still alive and finally accepted the fact that I'm happy to be a machinist with acceptable spelling skills)

everyone already writes about winston churchill... look up tommy douglas... minister of the social gospel.. "helping the poor"... didn't fly planes or slay any dragons but would still make a good paper
Do a search on a guy named Richard Feinman, and what all he did during the Manhattan Project (and beyond!). That should meet the timeframe requirement (the 40's). He was a pretty amazing guy with a great sense of humor, and you will find that he did a lot of other great and amazing things during his life.
You probably didn't find anything on this guy, because I just realized I spelled his name wrong . It is Richard Feynman. That plus "manhattan" should google you up some good stuff.
