I have a 99 Ranger that I have had in the shop numerous times to find out what a howling sound in the front end was. They could never find the problem, take note it only does it when you disengage the 4x4 and only on the left side. After the warranty expired they think they figured out the problem--the left hub isn't disengaging. I don't see an aftermarket manual hub listed for the 99 Ranger, any ideas? Is there a centercap replacement for the front end when switching to manual hubs? Any help would be appreciated.

had a similar problem on my dads 95 150, we decided to go with warn lock outs, because they were cheaper, and more dependable.
Yes it kinda sucks to lock them, but in the winter months they stay locked any way.
with the manual locks the electric 4x4 works they same except for the hubs.
I am having the same problems with my 99 Ranger as well. The only way I have heard that you can switch to manual hubs on the 98 and newer Rangers is to switch out the front axle too. I guess this has to be done because our Rangers have the pulse hublock vacuum system and just switching the hubs to manual lock like Warn will not work without the axle, but this is what I have found out from the dealer and other websites. Either way, it looks like an expensive fix. Hope this helps.
I've got a F-250 HD Diesel 4x4 with auto hubs. I bought it used and plowed for 3 years including 1 blizzard. I don't believe the last guy replaced them but after I put on over 60,000 miles my hubs went out. I love my auto hubs even though most guys want manual. Thing is I found that these guys usually have a local 4x4 shop change their new truck's auto hubs to manual almost as soon as it leaves the dealer. If you call around your local 4x4 shops they still have the new auto hubs they took off the new trucks and you can get them at a very good price.
