Where on the frame is the vin located? I don't think that my door plate is correct. It has been screwed on. I believe that I have a 66 F100, but door says F250 and title says what door says. It is a short bed, also. I have had several people say they thought no F250s were short beds. Any help? Scott
It Is Located On The Passenger Frame Rail, Right Under The Altenator If You Stand Directly In Front Of The Front Right Tire And Look Down You Should See It. It May Take Some Sand Paper To Remove Any Rust Or Paint As In My Case.
Many a door have been changed on these old trucks... If you have 5-bolt wheels, it's a F100. Yes, the vin is on top of the passenger side frame rail, right about between the spring housing and the radiator support. Some brake/carb cleaner and a brush should get you to what you are after.
Hello 66 BlackFleet
Welcome to FTE and the world of "Slick 60s trucks". . . .
You are correct there are no SWB F 250s or F350s for that matter. It sounds like somebody had a vehicle without a Title or Legitimate Paper Trail.
A word to the wise is after you get the serial# on the chassis, have the DMV or a Law Enforcement agency run it on NCIC & ISIS. Tell them you are "considering" that vehicle and want to know if it has any legitimacy problems.
Whatever you do don't waltz into your DMV with 2 S/Ns or conflicting data, and a bunch of questions, until you find out the status of the number on your chassis.
If NCIC & ISIS checks come back "negative" meaning no record of legal problems, go from there. If there is a record of problems, Stolen, Skip [on loan], serious violations, warrant, abandoned, or salvaged (as in taken off road for some reason) do nothing until you get some local legal advice & check your options. There are always options, but volunteering you've a vehicle with number problems in your possession without lining your ducks up 1st can get you Grand Theft Auto Charge for possessing a stolen vehicle, if that's how it comes up in the data base checks I suggested.
FWIW, [and this is a talking point that works in many cases] 1965 Vehicles do not have VINs, they had/have Serial Numbers [S/Ns] instead. VINs didn't come along until 1968, when vehicles began having a VIN Tag riveted to lower top front of dashboard where the Law could see it. It was by federal Mandate, along with seat belts, locking Steering Columns, Turn Indicators and Marker lamps.
In some states, Georgia for instance, they had no Titles prior to 1968 when the Feds mandated the VIN concept, and traceability via VIN ID's. What it means is it's possible to register Georgia Vehicles without a title if it's 67 or older. . . It may be that way in Alabama also. That's one Duck I've lined up a few times for "paperless" or incorrectly papered vehicles from early 60s circa.
Also, Door Tag says right on it it's a warranty Data Plate. Some states took it upon themselves to use them as ID which FoMoCo denies, as far as ownership is concerned.
FoMoCo 1965, welcome to you also. Sounds like you know your Slicks huh? A lot of people don't know about serial # being on R/H Rail top Flange. . . .
Also FWIW "Invalid Frame S/Ns" can be obliterared by exposing it to acid and etching it illegible. This is especially so on a slick since battery tray on many is right above the location where the S/N appears.
Good Luck y'all . . . . and again Guys Welcom to FTE's 61-66 Forum
well, as i would have guessed the numbers don't match. starts out F10--2 wheel drive f100. I will have to do the legal search stuff sometime when I get a chance. Scott
My title and door tag start F25, my truck has 5 lugs and the chassis number starts F10. My truck was cobbled together just less so before I got it. I was told that NCDMV could attatch a NC tag to the door, but I declined.
Some one on the boards has a tag line "Drive it like you stole it"
Blackfleet,
I kinda suspected that, in fact I'd wager we all kinda did. Remember CYOA while doing your background research.
Another remedy is get someone in the salvage business to write you a reciept for a "replacement (whatever # is) frame" with a date after you bought your truck. Claim you replaced it. Of course it will not resolve the fact you don't have an F250 like your paperwork claims you do.
ive been readin here for a while and i went out to my 65 f100 and looked for this # by the alt and it is just not there no grind marks or nothing i used steel wool and coke a cola and got a nice shinny rail now with no #'s is it posible that ford forgot to stamp it?and is there any other place to find the # without taking the truck apart thanks hmm mabe i could just find a title and door tag to put on so they match lol
Mine is stamped in 2 places. 1st place = on pass. side rail, 12'' back from front body mount ( core support). 2nd = 11'' back from pass. side front cab mount. Which you can't find unless the cab is off. I just painted my frame yesterday and just went out and measured. I hope this helps.
Bert, Some of them numbers are real good hidders, and they can vary a little where they are, but rest asured it's there. I think the numerals are about 1/8" high and the number will run lengthwise on the rail.
I know never to say never, but it is pretty certain the vehicle didn't leave without a verified stamping.
