My son who is in 10th grade has a chance to go to Costa Rica in April with a group of students from his school. They will be studying the leather back sea turtle. I was just at the school meeting and they were asking for ideas of fund raising events since it will cost each student $2600.00. I had to mention an idea that I heard about having a parents Prom Dance. Parents only with the kids as chaperone's. Go back to the 60's and 70's and early 80's music. I knew that I should have kept my mouth shut. Now since I said it, they want me to put it together. I know that there are a few women on FTE, and was wondering if any of you have ever done something like this. I need help to get things started. Guys, if you have any idea also, please help me. I think I'm in deep now.
I'd start with grabbing a few volunteers and then designing a news release for your local news paper, that will inform the public about the function. List Price, date & time, location, description of the event, where to get advance tickets and are they cheaper than at the door, get some silent auction items and sell chances for the prizes. I saw an almost carnival style event, where you could buy numerous tickets for certain prizes..it was a game-like and festival atmosphere & tickets sold like hotcakes.
You did good above..."Parents, go back to the 60's 70's and 80's with your kids chaperoning...show them how you had your fun!" ( Like, please quit mom & dad...I'm sooo embarassed! You really danced like that? )
Dick, you are always a good one to get a post from. Isn't it funny how you can make a connection with someone on a fourm like this. There are a few other that are always great to hear from. You have some ideas that I did not think of. Thanks
When you come up to Gardiners with your trailer and if we can take a few hours to go hunt a bit, I'll tell you a bit more about how that little carnival thing went...it seems to be a real popular idea for fundraising at most events. I went to two last year...an NRA - Friends of NRA annual banquet and also to a Turkeys Unlimited fund raiser. Both of them made a lot of money. The hardest part is organizing quick enough and getting donated items for the silent auctions and the ticketed prizes. People with money seem to like to spend it at these functions.
You might want to make up a flyer for all the kids to take home to their parents, and not just the kids planning on going... for all the kids - that way the whole school can help raise money for the trip, and you'd get a much better dance turnout.
Also, probably stick to 60's and 70's music, maybe a few early 80's - or maybe you could do themes like the first hour would be from the 60's, next hour would be 70's...
Probably wanna get some decorations going, too, and some food/beverages.
I wish they'd have had a classics dance of some sort when I was in high school (graduated last year) - nowadays all the dances are basically you dress in pajamas or sweats and a t-shirt, and they play 95% rap and hip-hop hizzle fizzle or whatever it's called, and the kids all simulate like they're having sex, only with their clothes on... although the senior prom was really nice, since it was formal and had a little more variety (at least it had more than 2 slow songs )
Make sure the kids that are going on the trip are involved heavily in the work of the project too. Always ticked me off when we'd do fundraisers at our high school years ago and the parents would do all the work and the kids would benefit. The senior classes would always have a big party after graduation that was at a sports facility place and we wold fundraise all year, parents were involved too but the students were always involved. Now, 7 years after I graduated, the kids are so dern lazy they don't hlep with it and the parents do it or it doesn't get done. Don't get me started about the joke of a football program they have now compared to the powerhouse of So. Illinois that I grew up around and was a part of.
Another thought on the fund raiser. If this is to be more than just a school event, ie. public, contact your local media outlets to get advertising coverage for free. I think the prom sounds like a great idea, and all the additional suggestions, like the silent auction, raffle, etc., are fantastic. We found the local media more than willing to make public service announcements for fund raisers for events such as this. Especially not for profit groups.
just a thought for you, do you have DJ yet? if not go to some of the local bars that cater to the ,older crowd. then talk to the owners for reconmendations, they might even help with sponsoring it.you never know....Great idea you got going, i hope that your shoes are not very large.... .
Maybe you should also try having a internet cookie sale......FTE should have plenty.
Evertime I log out they take mine back.
This is for the kids. Make them work for it.
Get some sponsors in town.....
*A party store might donate a few hundred ballons or so...kids blow em up.
*Make it a dinner too. A restraunt might cut you a break on catering. Also the schools cafeteria may also cook up a nice dinner...ours did a nice job with things such as yours. Talkin awsome SteamBoat Round and such.
*Make the kids do the serving and waiting tables.
*Chairs & tables for dinner. Ask church if they might lend theirs for the evening.
*Many radio stations DJ parties. Explain...see if they'll cut ya a break.
Many places will be lending to help out when its for the kids and the enviroment.
Thanks everybody for your ideas. I hope that I didn't get in to deep. I think I'll be okay. There is another couple helping also. There are only 10 kids going.
