can anyone tell me the best material to repair steering wheel _jb weld -eastwoods kit or por kit
I saw a beutifully restored steering wheel this Sat. in my autobody class and he and the instructor use the filler material sold at some local auto parts stores for plastic bumpers. two part like others but flexable. The crack needs to be dug out b4 using this build up material. The instructor did say it was similliar Eastwood material. Ed ke6bnl
I'm doing my 51 wheel right now, I'm using the two part fiberglass repair kit used to repair boats. I plan to replace the column and wheel later on, so I'm just playing with it to see how well it will turn out. The kit comes in a small package, so I didn't have to buy a whole quart of the stuff, and it is working out well. I did a site search and found a web sight that had step by step text and pictures. I think I will try painting it with Acrylic Enamel and clear coat over it. I remember I did a refinish on a red Bronco leather wheel years ago and had the red dye on my hands everytime I drove it for quite a while. If you have not removed the wheel from the column yet be careful you don't smash the hollow threaded part of the shaft. I used a puller and still managed to smash the threads, it took me a whole day of filing and cussing to get the nut to thread back on it.
As far as protecting the threads, I just left the nut on the threads about 1.5 turns. Once the wheel mvoes up that far, it is loose enough to walk the rest of the way off. Good luck, John
Restoring mine now with the POR kit. Putty worked well and am doing the final paint and polish tomorrow. Expensive and looking back all one really needs is the epoxy putty and you can buy the other stuff in the kit for alot less at a parts house..
