Unhappy steering wheel movement

I just failed my state inspection. The steering wheel moves too much. The problem is not too much play as I turn the wheel, but it actually moves up and down and side to side. The mechanic tried to tighten it up, but it didn't work. He said I needed new bearings. He said it's a common problem, and there was a repair kit available. But, for the kit and to install it, he wants to charge me about $300. I think that's too much. Does anyone know about this kit, and where I might get one? I bet I can put it on myself... I looked around online to buy parts, but I couldn't find the "repair kit", or the bearings for that matter. Any ideas?

Yea, Mines an 88 f150 4x4, the steering wheel is a good handle to pull yourself into the truck, unfortunatly mines loose to,-But, they havent caught on yet.
You might want to try WWW.LMCtruck.com I think they have the upper and lower column bearing for around $20.00, but thats not what goes. Its usually the flanges that are worn out,-But the Upper and lower flanges are $130.00 each
You should definatly see whats worn out first- a new tilt steering shaft runs around $280.00 through them. check out LMC they have Illustrations. good luck.

-And then again, it may be cheaper to go to the junky..
car-part.com -type in your vehicle info, and it'll find one in your area.

Do you know if it's the tilt housing that is wiggling, .............or the wheel it self ?

If it is the wheel it self, there are two bearings and usually the top one is bad. I found information on them by doing a search here about six months ago. The bearings are usually available at most dealerships along with the sleve that goes inside them at a cheap price. If I remember, the computer information at the dealers has the two bearings reversed as to which is upper and which is lower.

You will probably have to remove the airbag and the clockspring and examine things to fully diagnose it. You will also have to pull the steering wheel.

I'm pretty sure its the wheel itself. When they pulled it off in the shop, it looked like the shaft was moving inside the housing.

The junkyard is the way to go. My son's '95 F250 4X4 had a loose steering wheel...and it was the bearings. It's more work to rebuild than to replace the whole assembly.

I went ahead and let the guy fix it. Business is so crazy, right now, the time was worth more than the money. But I'm determined to tackle the next thing myself.

Thanks for all the great advice. Everyone on here is so helpful. It's like haveing a mechanic as a friend.
