won't start..

I just replaced my 352 in '65 with a 360 from '79 donor and now I can't get it to start. It appears to not be getting fire out of the coil. motor turns over but nothing is reading out of coil. stuck screwdriver in hole while turning and nothing... positive pole has wire going to ign via split with solenoid and neg going to dist. positive also has condensor or resistor bolted to pole for which wire ends at resistor. what am I doing wrong? I tried 2 different coils and still nothing... neg pole shows 12v when ign on - i'm assuming that is ok.

Colt,
Try a hot wire from the batt side of the solenoid to the service side of your coil then crank it over. If that works you have a problem either with your solenoid, or the wire from the bypass terminal on the solenoid going to the coil.

The solenoid cuts all power from system to crank engine over. To have spark, there's a by-pass terminal [one of small, screw like looking, studs on front of solenoid] when starer is engaged, by-pass terminal becomes live, supplys juice to coil & fires engine. When Ign key is "released" regular ignition, thru switch, becomes live. It's what engine runs on normally, and what goes dead when cranking with starter.

Without by-pass live curent or some other source of live current engine will crank but never fire, until coil is charged by current. Wire I said to try is method for testing validity of system without solenoid being a part of it. If engine starts & runs with that wire in place, you'll need to disconnect, or remove it to shut engine down. Otherwise it will run on until it runs out of fuel or current, one.

Hope this helps you out.
