Temperature Guage Cold...Always
I changed the T-stat about 15 months ago, it didn't help my low heat output in the cabin, nor change the low water temperature gauge reading. Because its a cheap fix, I'm going to change it again, hopefully this morning.
It's -14C outside and I'm planning to warm up the truck, then shut it down and put a ceramic heater in the forward part of the engine. I have some 6 mil vapour barrier and 1 inch sheets of rigid insulation with which to build a small "tent". We'll see how that goes...

By the way, I assume there is no need for RTV sealant, as I bought the O ring gasket? Rookie question I know, its been awhile...

The actual working conditions were quite pleasant, with a trouble light and radio helping. The small ceramic heater was at the limit of its capability, but did keep my fingers warm. Outside air temperature reached -7C (+20F).
Once repair complete and RTV sealant allowed to set, a test drive showed immediate results. Loads of heat. I now think that I installed the previous thermostat with the air valve not at the top, hence little or no water circulation (Yikes!) for the past year, and a low gauge reading, and little heat in the cabin. Remember...slow...down...

I used the Ford factory T.stat and a factory sender.
I removed the T.stat and did the boiling water on the stove trick.
The old unit DID open up sooner than the new one.
I also replaced the sender but all I really needed was the T. stat.
I have replaced it about 20K before. The German units seem to fail quickly.
It fixed my problem. The needle is just below the "waterline" on the guage.
If I have the problem again I might try a different manufacturer of Thermostat.
