I need to hear from some of you out there who know:
I am confused about the flowmaster muffler (40 series vs 70 series) for the V10. The flowmaster webpage recommends the 70 series for the V10, yet I have heard more than once on this page and others that people have been very unsatisfied with the 70 in terms of sound and performance.
On the other hand, I've heard good things about the 40 series from people on here who have it, yet it is recommended for the smaller gas engines (5.4L and 4.6L).
I am in the market for a muffler as well and all I can offer is that it is personal preference. The 70 is quieter which some like and dislike. If you got a flowmaster for noise and it is as quiet as stock, you are upset. Some do not like the additional noise of the 40 series while others are looking for more sound. Depends on your preference and neighborhood. I am looking to magnaflow i think. I have also heard the the super 40 works well on the V10.
I have the super 40 on my V10. I can' t say enough about it. I love the sound. Do a search on it and you'll find a lot. Some people think that it creates a lag in the throttle. Mine only lasted about 500 miles, now it seems like it's got some more pep. Maybe just me though. I think I like to hear the sound from the pipes a lot so I stay on the gas.
What was previously said is right though, the 70 series isn't quite as raw as the 40. That's why if you want the louder exhaust go with the 40 series.
If you want it to be loud you need to just cut off the muffler. I have a 40 series delta flow and it's pretty tame compared to the same muffler on a V-8. On the highway crusing it's not even noticeable. If I were to do it again I might put on a 30 series. I love the way it sounds when driving next to a wall or going under an overpass. I just wanted that sound all the time(in the cab).
I have a 70 series on mine and I like it. Just enough sound to notice but not too much to fail a state inspection. I also have the complete Banks powerpack. I just switched mufflers to the flowmaster because it sounded so much better than the Banks dynaflow muffler.
My buddy and I have had 3 different options between the 2 of us in the past few months.
No muffler -He first cut his muffler off comletely. LOUD, VERY LOUD! If you want sounds, and lots of it, all the time. That's your mod right there
40 series - That's what he is running now. He felt that with out the muffler he lost to much low end performance. The 40 series is still pretty loud. Sounds good at idle and gets obnoxious at higher rpms.
50 series - Is what I had put on my truck, with a new mandrel bent 3" rear section. Nothing super fancy. It's got a great sounds. More tame at idle than the 40 series. But you really hear it when you open it up. Between the intake and the exhaust it's a whole new sounds.
I've been meaning to get some sounds clips from both truck but haven't had time.
I’d love to hear some sound clips of anyone’s truck with Flowmasters on it. I am not looking for an obscenely loud truck and I don’t want to have to yell to talk to anyone while driving down highway. But I would like some sound and also not a loss in low end/off line power by doing so.
My experience with flowmasters is limited to a 5300 Vortech V8 in a Z-71, which was a good tone, it was a 40 series. Not too loud, yet a huge improvement over stock in all areas. Or than that, I have had two 4.6L V8 F-150 4x4’s that I had mufflers cut off, welded a Y-pipe in it’s place and ran duals out back with chrome tips. Again, a huge improvement in sound (too loud at times) but lost some low-end on that deal b/c of not enough back pressure (no muffler at all!)
This is my 1st V10 so that’s why I’m trying to get as much info as possible before going out and having someone weld on my truck!
JML79, are you making your posts on some other program then cutting and pasting them here?
The amount of HTML jibberish that I just removed from your post was crazy!
If you are let me know, but if you are just using the normal REPLY here let me know that too. Cause somethin' wrong...

Sorry for taking over the thread.
In reference to your subject, I ran a 40 and loved it but in hindsight would go with a 50 or 70 in the future on my next V10. But then, only if I got another Excursion. The 40 would drone around 1800-1900RPM. Right 'bout cruising speed...
I don't think the drone would have been a problem in a pickup truck.
I have the FM40 in mine. It is not loud inside at all at any rpm so far. I have had it for a few weeks now. The guy at the shop told me that it would get louder after a while, still waiting for that to happen. When I got it my wife gave me the "it wasn't broken speech" but after she drove it, she liked the new rumble the EX had.
I appreciate everyone's input on this. One other thing I forgot to ask:
For those of you who are running an aftermarket muffler, did you cut out the facotry y-pipe and have dual inlets as well as dual outlets? I am wondering what will happen to the backpressure or exhaust flow through to the muffler if I were to do away with that y-pipe and actually have dual inlets instead.
I read a bunch of threads here about what works or does not work with the V10. Read about a few that did not like the bank's exhaust and switched. I read a few that did not like the Flowmaster that they put on. Someone really liked their 4 inch magnaflow which was what I tried to do first. Unfortunately, in the great state of Alabama, there are no shops handling 4 inch pipe (at least with in 50 miles of me). So I went back to reading and found that David Brady really liked his Super 40 and I decided to try that. I was uneasy about the V10 sound after driving a Bronco V8 with Flows which I loved. The muffler guys here have not added a muffler to a Ford V10 which did not add to my surety. It was a tough hour of wait but man am I impressed. It has an excellent rumble from idle past 3K rpms and that is without tips as they did not have what I wanted. The interior noise increased a little but now it sounds balanced. Before, I could hear the motor noise well, and now I can hear a little of both. Deffinitely not too loud outside or inside. I have a FM super 40 3 inch inlet and dual 2.5 out. The stock pipe (3inch) was connected to one of the outlets and a new 3 inch pipe was connected to the other. I have a tailpipe in the stock location and another on the drives side exiting the same. I plan to add 4inch or 5 inch tips when I get around to it. For those of you waiting, this is a set up that really sounds great. It was completed for 164 total. I should not have waited 6000 miles like I did.
Thanks David Brady as I owe the happiness to you. If only I could have gotten you to pay for it!

$160!!!! for what I paid to have it done at Midas, I might as well have tacked yours on too. I got the ****, I think I ended up with about a $450 check, tips and all.
I am glad that you're happy with it though, I still love mine, and still can't say enough about it.
Mine is not mandrel bent and I do not have tips either. This muffler shop did not have 4 or 5 inch tips that were less than 22 inches. I want ones that are about 10-12 inches. They will cost an additional 30-35 purchased and installed. It will be complete for $200 which is less than my Bronco's exhaust for a similar set up.
I am in Alabama and things are a bit cheaper here than in the Springs. I moved here from the Springs (Army). I lived off of Airport and Academy in that newer subdivision. Currently, thinking of getting out and moving back there. I loved it there and miss the snow especially skiing and snowboarding.
Ditto, on many of the things you said. I like it here, plan on gettin' out, love the snow (from Wyo). I drive by your old subdivision every day. I am on Peterson, Army Space Command.
Again, I'm glad you're happy with your set up. Take 'er easy.
