Hi,
I'm trying to help out some friends with a motor swap and rebuild. As best as we can tell we have a 77 351w engine from the castings on the heads and in the lifter gallery. (My friends have discarded the original timing components without matching old to new.) After the fuel pump eccentric is installed there seems to be rubbbing on the timing cover. As we have a D7AE timing chain cover casting - can you tell me if this cam gear is supposed to have a spacer built into it? We've looked at Cloyes and Sealed Power units. I've been told that they are running a 302 performance cam in this basic stock Windsor engine. I've run into similar issues with a 65 289 Mustang engine in the past. I'm not a fan of the so called improvements made by aftermarket companies. Please advise. I'll be glad to provide casting numbers if needed. thanks cw.
In my early 70s 302 there was no spacer. make sure they have the sprocket on the right way. The flat side should be out. There is a dowel on the cam that should just barely stick out of the sprocket to keep the eccentric from spinning. I had two different size dowels to choose from on mine. I don't know if there are any differences between a 302 or 351 cams either. Maybe someone else knows more about that.
you may have gotten a fuel inj. timing set. these are spaced in the cast due to it not needing an ecentric cuz of the electric fuel pump. i have seen this before.
