Ive got my 302 rebuilt and running, but only on 5 cylinders. its got spark, the carberator has been rebuilt and is working fine, and it seems to have compression as well. We have a theory that its the cam. I replaced the stock cam with an rv cam but it was nothing drastic and shouldnt have caused any problems. the valves may be opening for a longer duration but not lifting high enough. If we could adjust the valves this could probubly be compensated for but i have the newer type non adjustable heads with 1.6:1 stamped-steel rocker arms mounted to raised bosses on the cylinder head with a 5/16-inch bolt through a pedestal-style fulcrum and a sheetmetal sled. see picture on the link below
does anyone know where i can buy an adjustable rocker arm setup that wont bankrupt me? i found some from comp cams that is fully
adjustable but they want almost 500 dollars for them. if i had older style heads with a 7/16 or 3/8 studs i could get some adjustable studs for cheap but that would be too easy. i still have some more leg work to do.
crane sells a pushrod guideplatye and stud conversion for lioke $90
then $80 for a set of roller tipped rockers off ebay and youve got it done for under $200
The CompCams roller rockers that you are talking about are very good. The price on their website made me gag until I checked Summit Racing. They had them for around $350.00.
I picked-up a set of them, and have not looked back. The quality is very good (as should be expected for the $$) and the adjustable pushrod cups make adjustment with these pedestal mounts a breeze.
You could buy an adjustable pushrod and measure the length that you need. I am pretty sure that you can order custom length pushrods from Crane or CompCams. It would probably be the less expensive option.....
