Cool Big clunk, no reverse!!

Hey gang.
Have a 1999 EB 4WD Explorer, 91K miles on it. This evening, I went to back up from the driveway and when I put it into reverse, I heard a loud "clunk" (it sounded like the normal engagement of the reverse gear, but louder), and it refused to go into reverse. It will, however, go into drive. The reverse lights come on, and you can hear the normal sounds of the tranny going into reverse, but no go. Any Ideas?

Also (way off a tranny topic, but while i have you here) My A/C fan only works on highest fan speed. If you try to reduce the fan speed, it won't blow at all. The compressor is still cycling every few minutes as it should, but the fan is high speed or nothing. ANy ideas on this one would be appreciated as well.

Thanks for any advice

GC

With regard to the A/C fan, a quick look at ALLDATA and a review of the electrical diagram suggests strongly that you have a bad blower motor switch resistor and/or thermal limiter. When you put the fan control in "High", the resistor is completely bypassed, which is why full speed works.

The following is copied from ALLDATA:

"The components of the electrical system are the blower motor relay, blower motor, a heater blower motor switch, a heater blower motor switch resistor with thermal limiter, an A/C cycling switch, a high pressure cut-off switch, an A/C clutch, and the fuse and wiring needed to protect and link the total circuit.

The blower motor is installed in the A/C evaporator core housing, which is part of the A/C evaporator case. The blower motor is connected to the electrical circuit with one hard shell connector located on the blower motor, which feeds back through the relay.

The mode function switch is installed on the A/C control and, with the heater blower motor switch resistor, provides four operating speeds.

The heater blower motor switch resistor is installed in the A/C evaporator case between the blower motor and the A/C evaporator core."

Look at the fan speed swith on the dash. Common problem is the plastic heats up san shorts out or sticks in 1 position. If the switch look like it has gotten hot, replace it. Advance Auto has them.

Same thing happened on my 98 AWD with 121k miles. In reverse I could rev it up in reverse and it would engage. Then it started shifting rough between 1st and 2nd.

Got a rebuilt from Ford for $1350 and a friend installed it for $250. 3 yr / 36k mile warranty. exchange.

Great deal (use a local buyer of Ford parts to get it wholesale)

Hey, gang.

Thanks for the replies. The reverse gear, xfer case, drum and belt got damaged. Had the whole tranny rebuilt for $1800. All is well. Thanks again.

Sometimes due to humidity in electrical parts; computer does not send correct signal to transmission. check for water deposits or humidity in elec. system.
