Hello,
I have tried doing a search but was not successful.
What could be causing occasional problems with the power windows in my 97 F150 Lariat not wanting to go down when the window button is depressed.
It has happened to both windows at one time or another but NEVER to both at the same time.
All I get is the clicking sound of the switch button, In the past the problem has always gone away sometimes in minutes, or sometimes in 1/2 a day or so but afterwards no more problems for several months or longer. Currently the passenger window has not been wanting to go down for a couple of days.
Thank God it has always been a problem with going down and not up.
Have you ever spilled coffee or soda on the switches? Sounds like they might be dirty, causing a bad connection. However, if you can hear the motor running when you press the button and the window doesn't move or moves slowly, then the motors may need to be replaced. I would pop out the switch panel and clean the switches and make sure the connections are tight and see what happens.
I have never spilled coffee or anything on the switches and I am the original owner. The only noise I hear is the clicking sound of the window switch.
Your suggestion of cleaning the switches is a good one but I find it hard to believe that both switches on both doors would go bad at the same time
(Remember that this problem currently is on the passenger window.)
Is the switch easy to remove and clean? Does the door panel need to be removed? All advice is welcome and appreciated.
Well it is a 97, thats 7 yrs of use, stuff wears out. Is the clicking the mechanical clicking of the button, or an electrical clicking, like a short? The switch panel pops off, thats how it is on my 02, should be about the same with yours.
Triton 2002,
You are correct in that all things wear out but the passenger side switch has gotten very little usage compared to the drivers side. Nevertheless, I will try your suggestion of trying to pop out the switch and cleaning the contacts, etc. Hopefully that will work. If it works I will post back.
The clicking is the normal mechanical noise of the switch.
Take care.
Penton97F150, try this.. the passenger side window switch is probably fine. But the switch on the drivers side may not be. After taking passenger side door panel off and switching two wires I got my window to go back up ( it would go down fine but not back up ) I bought new passenger side door switch and replaced and problem didn't change. So I looked at the switch on drivers side ( which I found out acts as a master switch, powers runs through it before reaching the passenger side to complete circuit) You can remove the switch from the door ( you dont have to take whole door off, the smaller cover comes off by its self) and then the switch can come apart in two pieces. When I did this I found that the switch had a short. I could actually see where it had arc'd and was no longer making contact. I replaced bottom part of the switch from one I found at junk yard and problem solved. I drove for years asking people not to roll down passeneger side window.. and the problem was so easy to solve in the end..
Long story short... check drivers side switch..
