What's the bezel? I'm going out to get a birthday present for my brother today and I think I'll make a point of picking up a manual. You've helped me out quite a bit here, with the others in this thread, but the time has come for me to get off the pot. If you know what I mean. I'll get this thing fixed come heck or high water, by golly.
Thanks a million, and I'll post how it went for me. Assuming I get to it relatively soon. How much time am I looking at doing the procedure you are mentioning regarding the bezel? Also, is this with the dash removed? I really don't want to do that if it's at all possible.
But anyhow...the Bezel that thier referring to is the smaller piece of dash that goes around the instrument cluster that on most Rangers encompass the dimmer controls and headlight switch...which only seem to be held in by a total of five screws holding it in.
Now that I know what the bezel is, my switch (98 Ranger XLT) is in the main part of the dash. I did notice that the section that the hood and brake release is in, is different and can come loose. Didn't want to pry too hard in case there are some attachments that can be broken. If I could get that off I think I can get to the switch.
Didn't get a manual today. I actually went into a Schucks store but just couldn't part with the cash. $18 for a manual. They had one open, a Chilton's, and it didn't look very clear on how to do anything in it. I'll wait until I find a Haynes. I've had those before and I remember they were a lot more clear. Photos and everything were much better.
I have bought that bulb seperately before from a Mazda dealer, I think it was like $6, a genuine ripoff, but that's life. I kept the bag so that I could find the number and order it again. My new truck (that I also bought used) came the same way, so I'll be doing that pretty soon. I'll post the number if I find the bag.

Correction, at 11,600 miles my switch now does not light up...I'm taking it in to the service department tomorrow and having them fix the light and while it is there I am going to have them figure out why the light behind the on/off switch on the steering wheel for the cruise blinks. Might have them inspect the interior door handles too, they are black but the rubbery coating on them has been peeling since about 2 weeks after I got it.
Hahaha...what a coincidence...Was thinking about this issue the other day. I too, have a 2004 Ranger with a burned out bulb in the switch assy. Burned out at 6k miles.
Well, took the truck in this morning. Had the switch assy replaced as well as fix the wind noise from the driver's door. Unfortunately, they ran out of tranny additives to fix the 2004-2005 tranny fluid problem, so I have to go back next week.
Anyway, if anyone needs the P/N for the switch assy, here is is:

yes i even tried to slam the door and still no good. i had to go to work and park it and disconnect the battery so it will start when i get back from work.
After reading this thread, I went out and got some bulbs at Radio Shack (2 for $2). (I just looked for a small 12v bulb.) The one I got was #7219 (Radio Shack stock #272-1092). The bulb turned out to be a little smaller than the one in the actual switch, but I think it was a good thing because after manageing to peel off the green cover it slipped right over the new smaller bulb (with a little slack left). Long story short, my switch lights up now. Now if only my wife would let me fix the light in her Explorer...(I love this forum although my wife hates it because I'm always working on my truck.)
the switch that controls my dome ligth and rear cargo light works for all of the lights except the dome light they just do not turn off i tried the wd-40 on the door switches and still they stay on. i was able to remove all the bulbs and work it so i only have one buld in the dome light which is the drive side if i connect the others they stay on. any ideas
Hello everyone. Just joined FTE today! Great place! I have a 2004 Ranger Edge 4x4, ext. cab, 4.0 with 13000 miles and my backlight for the headlamp switch just recently quit working. Sounds like a real pain to change the bulb, so I think I will have the dealer do it since it's still under warranty. BTW, I bought this truck at a Chevy dealership!!! I was looking at Colorados but... too ugly!! (Taking to Ford for warranty work though.) Also, my truck does not have carpeting. Is this typical of the Edge package, or was it ordered that way?
It depends on how big you want to go, try starting a new thread with all the details and I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions, this is getting off the thread topic.
