I've got a '00 4.2 that has been a great truck. I climbed in this morning, turned the key, and nothing. I can start it by jumping the selonoid, and it runs fine, just doesn't even try to crank. Is it the switch on the clutch rod? Is there another switch? How do I tell, there's so many wires going to the switch on the clutch rod, I wouldn't even know where to start. Any help would be apprediated.
Have you tried having someone turn the key while you bang on the starter with a hammer or crowbar? When starters go out, they start to freeze up. If you bang on it while the key is turned, it'll either start up or try really, really hard to start up. If that's the case then you need a new starter. But since you can jump it then hmmm....
Try a little elbow grease with club soda, it'll take it right out...
Could be a solonoid also. Have someone turn the key to start and see if you have 12 volts at the solonoid S terminal. If you do it is a bad solonoid. If you do not, you need to look at the clutch switch or the ignition switch.
