Where I live, both black iron and galvanized are up to code for natural gas. Galvanized is also up to code for water supply, however black pipe is not (for obvious reasons). I would use 3/4 type L for the air lines. Galvanized pipe is just too much work (cutting, threading and fitting). I think the only reason guys still use black pipe for gas is the price.
