How much coolant?

I know this has been asked probably about a gazillion times, but how much coolant does the 7.3 hold? Isn't it 8 gallons? I had the radiator, water pump, and both drain plugs out, and I still could only get a little less than 6 gallons of distilled water back into my truck for the pressure check. I was really hoping to get virtually all of the old stuff out before adding the new coolant mixture.

BTW....for those interested in an update on the progress to solve my overheating woes, I have the new water pump on, the repaired radiator (hopefully) back in, and I filled it up with distilled water to flush the system and check for any leaks I might have. It was dark out, so I left the radiator draincock open to start draining out the distilled water and I came in for the evening. Tomorrow, I will finish draining the system as best I can, then add the fresh coolant/additive mixture, and give her a thorough test run. Hopefully afterwards I will have some good news to report in regard to the overheating issue.........

The book says 8 but in reality it barely holds 7...mine at least, and that last gallon takes a couple of weeks to fit in. 6 is about right for the initial fill, and the level will slowly drop over the next few days as the degas bottle does it's thing.

Cool.

Thanks, cookie88!

I got 2 bottles of additive, 4 gallons of Zerex, and 10 more gallons of distilled water ready to go. Can't wait to button this job up for good (I hope)!!

Man, it sure is good to have that thing running again! When I fired that thing off and smelled that diesel smoke for the first time in a few weeks, I almost had an out-of-body experience.........
