I have been reading these forums for a while now, reading about people's trucks and there problems with them. In alot of the answers, someone says to pull codes from you computer. I was wondering where I can get one of those fancy computer dealies for my truck. Will it only work for my truck? Can I use it on my other cars?
Your 87 ranger has a 1st generation EEC or electronic engine control. Technically it's called a Ford EEC IV (four) system.
You don't need a fancy code reader. These are for the 2nd generation EEC's. Some 1995 and all 1996 and newer vehicles have the 2nd gen EEC's.
Check other forum posts. I've seen links to internet sites describing how to pull codes for the 1st gen systems. (I can't think of a site off the top of my head). All you need is an analog volt meter or a test light. The hookup is a little complicated until you do it a couple of times. The codes come off as a flashing light (or a sweep of the volt meter needle). It's kind of like reading morse code, but this is much easier.
Check out the READ FIRST (technical information) at the top of this forum. Also a Haynes manual has info on how to hook up your meter or test light and extract the codes.
good luck
