Don't know for sure about a '95, but I think it is probably same as my '90. Chilton manual covers 87 - 96. Before taking off the serpentine belt, loosen the bolts that attach the fan clutch to the water pump. Take a socket, that will fit on the nut on the idler pulley/belt tensioner( not the bolt that attaches the pulley to the engine, but the stationary nut on the wheel) and a pull bar and raise up on the idler pulley in a counterclockwise motion. You should be able to get the belt off at this point. I think the socket is 16MM. Pay attention to how the belt is routed before removing if the routing diagram is not still under the hood. Maybe make a sketch. Loosen the attachment bolts that hold the fan shroud to the radiator. I think you will have to raise up on the fan shroud and allow it to fall back towards the engine. Reach thru the fan shroud space from the front and remove the bolts holding the fan clutch to the water pump. You could probably take out all but one bolt at the water pump and then you would only have to take out one thru the shroud. Not so tough on the arms. Pull the fan and the clutch out thru the fan shroud and reinstallation will just be in reverse.

Good luck,

Thank you for your help. How can I keep the pulley from spinning, there are four bolts that hold the pulley on and four bolts that hold the fan onto the clutch. There is a nut between the fan and pulley that is attached to the clutch.
Thanks

To loosen the (4) bolts, that attach the clutch to the water pump seems like you can hold one of the blades on the fan to get them started. Leave the fan attached to the clutch 'til you get it out.

I think I know what you are talking about...

Are you saying that when you try to loosen the bolts that hold the fan clutch itself to the water pump pulley, that the water pump pulley is turning on you?

If so, here is a trick I use when working on my '89 (I'm assuming the same as guzzler96 is about the Chilton's that they should be similar).

Leave the serpentine belt on the truck. Remember to remove the bolts holding the fan shroud in, cause you'll have to take the fan/fan clutch assembly and shroud out together. When you go to break the bolt loose that hold the clutch to the water pump pulley, I think you are running into your problem here, the pulley turns and the bolt won't break loose. What I do is, while I've got a wrench on one bolt getting ready to loosen it, I push down on the serpentine belt to tighten the belt around the pulleys and hold the water pump pulley in place a little better. It seems to work great, I've had to replace mine twice (one of my clutches was defective). The other method I've heard of is taking an oil filter strap wrench and using that to hold just the water pump pulley. I haven't tried that way, but I'm sure it would work too.

Hope this helps!

I just used a pipe wrench when I was working on mine. It holds the shaft of the water pump well while you back off the bolts.

Mine is an 87 so it might be different but I just unbolted the clutch from the water pump, fan and all, and let it drop out the bottom. I didn't touch the shroud or belt. I bolted the fan to the new clutch and reversed the process. To keep the fan from turning I just held it with my hands.

That pulley is gonna turn...

On my truck, you can reach inside the shroud, grab the fan, and spin it and the clutch will allow you to turn the fan without the water pump pulley turning.

When the engine is hot though, you shouldn't be able to turn the fan by hand. The clutch should be engaged in that case. But when you go to loosen the bolts that mount the clutch to the pump pulley, sometimes the pulley will turn if the bolt are really tight. Especially when the serpentine belt is a little worn.

If you try to hold the fan, the fan will stay in place, but the pulley will still turn.

I forgot the reason I had to replace mine is because it seized. Roared like a jet until I fixed it. The new one does'nt free up until after it's warmed up a little then locks again when it get's too warm.
