hey guys, the foam or "sponge like" collar around the vent air intake throat on my 91 has deterioriated. anybody replace theirs? i'm not sure if i'm describing it correctly, but it is in the engine bay, right in front of you after you open the hood. looks like it links the outer air vent to the air box/blower fan unit.( big black plastic thing) anyway, mine is shot. if i touch it it crumbles. before i remove it, i was looking for a suitable way to seal that up again. know what i mean? any ideas? rick

Carefully remove all the rotten foam. Some will still get down into fan compartment. It would probably be good idea to disconnect fan and remove it from airbox. This allow you remove any foam that might fall into compartment. That is what I did on my 1991. You can do without the foam for a while. Recently, I took some new foam packing material and cut strips of it to fit. I used 3M industrial adhesive and sprayed it onto foam strips. I then placed them carefully to seal this gap.
When the squirrels used mine for nest-making material, I sprayed expandable foam in the gap. Worked great, sealed up just fine. Just have to be careful not to use too much.
mine rotted away also. i have rolled up some more foam and stuffed it in there but was wanting to see if the dealer has original foam to put in there if they dont want to much for it. if anyone has been to the steeler lets us know. thanks
I went to Zellers (a Wal Mart type store here in Canada) and bought some foam. It cost me 2$ for a 2x2 pad. I cut it in the shape, cut the hole, and glued it in. It's works great and has lasted for 2 yrs now.
That foam thingy is what Ford calls a "Phellum". They sell them in CAnada at Parts Source but I sort of did the same as the others who posted. My foam was so rotten it disintigrated when I touched it. I figured that couldn't be good so I replaced it with some half inch thick foam that is really airy and full of holes so the fan could breath. It was the stuff you use in humidifiers. Black stuff, light and you can buy it in sheets about 6 inches by 2 feet long for $2.00. The good thing is that I didn't have to glue it or anything, I just take it out and rinse it if it gets grungy. Works like a charm. Hammerhead
thats what i figured too. probably seals out engine air from being inducted into the vent system, but i was just guessing. i'm thinking of some kinda rubber or plastic collar with acordian like folds in it to expand up to the vent opening. (my wife would say i'm just thinking too much!). my foam stuff has disentegrated now. i poked at it and unfortunately knocked some into the air box. doesn't look like an easy way to retrieve it. oh well
.you guys have many good ideas!! i hardly go to the dealer for things anymore. when i tell them i need something for a 91 their eyes kinda glaze over . there is an older dude there i have met, and many times i call and talk to him about stuff. he doesn't seem to mind at all. where do all the old techs and mechanics go? anyway i'm still thinking! rick

i still want to get a price from ford. sometimes you do all this work and find out you could have gotten a ford one for a few bucks which for me is alot nicer than making one. maybe some of you got a price from ford?
i went by the stealer today and it is true this part is no longer available from ford.
i made one today out of some foam i had laying around. not as nice as factory but it works.
