I had the glow plug harness on my 92 F-250 replaced a couple of weeks ago (glow plugs were failing at a rapid rate)...had quite a bit of resistance in the harness. Initially, all seemed well.
As the temperatures have dropped (Alaska), I'm finding that when the temps are below freezing, the "Wait to start" light does not come on unil I have cranked the engine for a few seconds. Today it took about 20 seconds of cranking until the light came on, after which the engine fired right up.
There's no problem with the light/glowplug operation in warmer temps, or after the engine has been run for a while. Is it possible I've got a loose connection somewhere that get's reconnected with engine vibration? Perhaps a metal to metal connection is loose when the engine is cold, and as it warms up the connection tightens?
The solonoid on my controller used to take spells where the light would come on, but the plugs weren't heating. I would leave the door open, watch the dome light and turn the key on and off till the light would dim. Not sure what would cause your problem other than a loose ground somewhere or a bad controller.
The GP relay, just like a starter solenoid, can become sensitive to temperature. I have seen at least one time where one wouldn't work if hot, and another time where one needed to be hot to work.
