The injector is positioned in the intake runner and fuel is injected as the intake valve opens and piston is on it's intake stroke. Since fuel is not directly injected into cylinder on compression stroke as in a DI engine it's called IDI. Much less fuel presure is required. Much less efficient than DI. Very old school. Basically it's fuel injection for diesels.

Yepper, the older diesels are idi (indirect injection). The fuel is sprayed into a precombustion chamber. Kinda like warms it up before it compresses it. The old old caterpillars were the same way. The change to direct injection came somewhere in the 94 model year with the power stroke designation.

Not at all accurate, no diesel injects fuel on the intake stroke. Rather, indirect injection (as said correctly before in this thread) injects it into a pre-cup which is a small chamber connected by a passage about the size of a pencil to the main chamber where the piston lies. The purpose if this small chamber is to get a flame started which then helps to futher atomize the fuel as it is shot out into the main chamber. As stated allows a lower pressure injection pump, and is not used much today.
