Question about my starter, Just did studs and head gasket job on my 04 Excursion, After found out the glow plug harness was bad, and replaced it. Now on a cold start, it won't crank. All the lights come on but won't crank until about 3-4 cycles of the glow plugs. Noticed today if i hold key in crank position, it will crank after glow plug light shuts off.(after 3-4 cycle).
Also new batteries and it starts fine when warm. Glow plugs tested OK. Don't know if I should be looking at the starter or glow plugs/ harness?
Just thinking might have wore out starter with all the extra cranking I put on it with bad harness and getting it fired up after stud job.
Kind of spent the max. on the stud job and don't have a lot of money to start shotgunning parts. Any help is appreciated!

Are all the grounds making good contact ? how does the Battery cables look? did work around the FICM make sure the connections are clipped in. Last resort pull the starter and have it tested, its been my Experience when the starter fails your done. Do you have any Gauges to read live data? I would look at FICM ( mp,lp,vp ) main power, logic power, vehicle power, and ALT for now.
I would check battery voltage when the glow plugs are on. Could possibly be the pullin voltage for the starter selonoid is higher than the battery voltage when the glowplugs are on. Check for 12 VDC while having someone hold it in the start position.

Would that indicate a bad starter if voltage was lower than 12?
Just with my plugs on I'm 11.2-11.6ish. Trickle charging overnight with those numbers.
Check for power at the starter while having someone hold the key to start. If it matches the battery voltage and is doing nothing I would take a close look at the starter. If it suddenly goes from 0 to battery voltage when starts to crank I would be checking the relay. 11.6 with the glow plugs on is what mine is at.
**Up date**
Cold start today, after second cycle of glow plugs held key in crank position and as soon as the glow plug light went off it fired right up....thoughs?
Instead of holding the key in start, try moving it from on to start repeatedly and see if itll turn over after the first gp cycle. Sounds like your starter relay, or solenoid is giving you trouble.

That what I was thinking it might be....Will try in morning! Thanks!
