Do they put sand in these engines? I figures the plug would be caked with debris- which it was. I didn't expect to see my drain pan look like a bunch of sand was washed into it. Is that much debris normal (first oil change and I've got ~900 miles on the 04 truck).
I changed my at 3K not to much debree on the drain socket but it was a very ugly greenish color. I was told it was dye in the oil. Have not change it yet again.
There is a lot of crap in the oil with the first oil change. I changed mine at 3500 or so. It was pretty gritty and a lot of fuzz on the drain plug. I changed it again at 7500 and got a Blackstone analysis. Blackstone says there is a lot of material from the manufacturing process. It is normal.
Did my first change at 2100 miles with no debris on the plug. Since that first change I have had an oil leak in the area of the oil filter. Even gets the inside of the hood a little wet. Worth keeping an eye on. David.

the oil on the inside of your hood may be from the CAC tube where it connects to the Elbow on the Manifold(see Pic in my gallery). they are known to blow some oil and it will appear on the rear of the hood near the oil filter.
Not to get off topic but while I was at the dealer I asked them if they did synthetic oil changes and the service manager said no because full synthetic oil foams too much. He suggested (natch) that I use the ford blend. I am wondering on the 6.0 if synthetic is Ok or what the deal is?

He has a real problem understanding oil...I run MD1 have for quiet some time...I like it....
Started using Mobil 1 Truck SUV 2,000 miles ago (13.5 quarts)...no issues.
IMO: The service managers experience with foaming may be attributed more to over filling in general than with syn oil. Could be he can't read the Ford Broadcast messages.
BTW: I have asked (3) Ford diesel tech's, all affiliated with different dealerships, and none officially recommend syn oil. However, except for cost, none could provide an explanation of any kind for their official position.
I have just bought a 2004 F-250 PSD Harley Edition. Have never owned a diesel truck (just boats) do you need to do the standard 3k mile oil changes or what is the established norm and is there a general consensus on what is the best oil and filter to use? I realize that all my above questions are up to a persons perception just looking for the standards or more importantly "what not to do". Most will say, along with your diesel manual supplement, that oil change frequency is dependent upon vehicle usage conditions.
Personally, years ago I moved to 5,000 mile intervals on all my vehicles gas or diesel. Mainly because of ease of tracking for my vehicle maintainence challenged immediate family members (I will not mention their gender).
I do light infrequent towing, mostly city driving. Not in dust bowl conditions except during Dove hunting season.

TJ, looks like your service department strikes again. From remembering your past posts, that dealership has no business selling, touching, or even looking at a diesel vehicle. They steered you away from the factory brake controller because it was a 'first year item.' They delivered you a new truck with a beer bottle in it and questionable history. Then they gave you a truck that has an exhaust leak into the cab and can't correct it. Like I said in the past. Run away from these guys!
Six, believe me I am trying!!! The problem here is that yes, there are a lot of dealerships but you know the history of one, the other doesn't like to service vehicles that were purchased from any other (not their sale) and the third well, lets just say that they are worse than the first one as they left off lug nuts and broke wheel studs on my neighbors car and then replaced the hubcaps figuring that my neighbor would never notice. Soooo now I am left with a conundrum, do I go back to the first and get filled with bull or do I try to force my way (which I am currently trying) into the second or risk my life with the third??? Such a wonderful buying experience If I really didn't enjoy and believe in the truck I would go by a Dodge (yuk). Well, I better go wash my brain out for thinking such a thing but frustration makes people think crazy things!!
I did my first oil change on the truck today. It was far better then I expected. Mostly I was just a little aprehensive since I had not worked on a diesel other then my JD tractor and it doesn't hold near as much oil as this thing. I also installed a Fumoto valve for future changes. I have to say that I like this oil filter on top of the engine thing. I'm used to getting half my arm covered in oil trying to get those off. I learned that my oil catch pan only holds how ever much oil that was in the engine because it was full to the top.
Thanks to this group, I knew to only use 13.5 quarts to refill. I'm still going to let it sit a little while and check it again before start up to double check my fill.
I only had 2044 miles on the oil and I'll change it again when I hit 5000 miles. I looked at the magnetic oil plug and it only had a little stuff on it. I always change my oil hot and right after I shut it down. This is where I'm sure the Fumoto valve will be sweet. It was pretty hot this time
