Getting unstuck

Just read the post about the guy that died. What he did sounds fine to me. I guess it's not though. So how about you guys thats been doing this for a while help us new to the sport people.
Post your tricks, tips, and the right ways to get unstuck. I have always used log chains. What is the throw a jacket over the straps, does that help and how?

Its critical. If and when your strap/chain breaks the force is deflected downwards and into the ground if you have some weight hung over the line. Nylon straps are preferred over chain because when a strap breaks it will cause minimal damage if any, when a chain breaks you can have a lethal projectile. Usually not, as the weight of the chain usually drops it down but you can still have an errant link fly off. Thats the problem with using the clevis in the middle of a strap...if that sucker breaks it will snap back as if shot out of a cannon; many people have died from incidences like this. A clevis in the middle of a nylon strap turns into a giant slingshot. If you HAVE to do it this way, you MUST drape some weight on either side of the clevis. I am NOT even remotely Captain Safty but I take recovery very seriously. If you don't it can either kill you or an innocent bystander.

Another thing is if you're using a tow strap or a winch with a hook on the end is attach the hook to the pull point with the opening pointing upwards. When a towhook snaps 99% of the time it will be in the curve where it comes back to actually make the hook. If it snaps with the opening in the air, it'll shoot the hook straight down into the dirt, away from people. if the opening points down it'll launch the cable or strap into the air. not good.

if you have to ask i would suggest that you read this from first page to last page before you go out next time. hell print it and put it in a 3 ring binder and carry it with you.....there is more info here and is better explained than any of us could. Everything you could ever want to know about recovery is talked about here.
