Angry Keep blowing mufflers out!!!!

My 86 150 with a 5.0 EFI keeps blowing mufflers out. First mufflers were rolled and crimped and it would just blow a hole in it.I took the air pump belt off some one told me it would help.I went to a welded design it doesn't blow a hole in it but it breaks the tubes apart in side then it rattles.this happens about once a year or so. There is no big & loud back fires. all of a sudden you'll hear a rattle then it gets worse. Any thoughts ?

Do you have any codes, bad gas milage etc? The only thingsI can think of would be a block ( Some prankster put a potaoe in your exhaust pipe), or you are running rich and backfiring, predetonation etc in which case you should be getting poor gas milage or getting backfires.

How close to the engine is the muffler? Too close and it will get hotter than normal, too far back and you will get more condensation thus rust because it is too cool. Is your muffler the lowest spot in the exhaust thus collecting water? Worse yet, did you abandon the "over the rear axle" routing and are running it out the side or under the axle so rain or if 4 wheeling, water from puddles can get in and then sit and rust it out?

All I can think of off the top of my head.

Are you running cheap mufflers? i.e. glass packs?

Good Luck,

Lee

As far as the location of the mufflers they are areabout where the original muffller was. The tail pipes do go over the rear axle and exit the sides behind the wheels. The local shop made and installed the system. One thing that I am wondering about is that they did'nt hook up the air tube to the converters. It's dual exaust all the way from the headers back. I have'nt checked for any codes. No potatoes in the tail pipes or blockage. Gas milage verys on this truck alot and I do occasionly hear it ping every once in a while. When I put a rebuilt in it I retarted the timing to 5 degrees becouse it would ping alot. I never see It bellowing black smoke out but some times the tail pipes are blacker than others. From inside the truck you can't here it backfire. If your sitting still and rev it up and let off you can here a little backfiring. They are not glass packs and the mufflers were'nt cheep but I don't remember what brand they were. I'll have to check to see what codes I get

You said you have dual exhaust, does both sides blow out or just one? If one, I would suspect a cylinder issue, both then general overall issue.

Air tube to cat probably wouldn't make that much of a difference, it is just there to pump a little extra fresh air to the cat to help it out.

I am running out of ideas quick. I recall sometime in teh past, about how an engine running poorly could cause caustic fumes but don't recall if it was by running too rich, lean, a timing issue or what. It was a long time ago and may have been an urban legend. -g-

I'm not sure becouse I brought it back to the shop. they warranty the first time. The second time they put the welded mufflers on. I'm doing it my self this time and going to make a note what side it is.

In my little experience in just the import world, 'Pinging' is very bad. Try running a higher grade of gas through the truck. You shouldn't have to retard the timing to get rid of pinging, you just need better gas. Which in a sense could all be cause you are running way too rich. First you need to un retard the timing. Your computer will do that so you are probably throwing a code or two just because you adjusted the timing not the ECU. Try the better gas though. That should help.

Is your Cat still the orginal cat? Or did you replace that? My replacement cat clogged up and caused the Muffler to explode.

Two new cats were put on. Is there a knock senser? If this was bad the ECU might not adjust the timing to correct the pinging. I would think this should run on reg gas the only mods done are a set of shorty headders and the dual exhaust. Am I thinking right? I haven't had time to run any codes to many other projects to finish. The truck needs to come into the garage for other work I need to do.
