If it was me in your position I would rebuild the 6.9. This comes from a 460 guy. In my opinion the 6.9 was the best diesel Ford has come out with, the 6.0 is still out, we'll see in a few years. I know this doesn't answer your question, but really give it some thought. One thing I know a great deal of problems with the 6.9 was fuel pumps.

I say rebuild the engine. But to change over. You will need to change at least the bellhousing. But I would change the tranny as well. While the 4spds all had the same final gear ratio the ratios for the other gears are different in the gassers then the diesels. You will need to change the mounts on the frame in order to bolt the engine in place. I have a crossmember for a 460. Radiator and core support. I have those as well. Wiring harness and ignition for a 460 which I also have. Depending on where your at I might be interested in your tired engine and do you some swapping of parts if your interested.

6.9 to 460 Gasoline

I would not make the swap either. The 6.9 is a fine engine and this is ALSO comming from a 460 guy. A 4 speed 4X4 diesel can pull a house down but won't win any drag races. It all depends on your needs. It seems to me that you already have an ideal setup though. Just my 2¢

In the early part of 1983, there were actually a close ratio and a wide ratio T-19 available for the 6.9 diesel. Starting in 1984, only close ratios were available for the 6.9 and the wide ratio for the gas. I have a 1986 F350 4x4 with a T-19 that the previous owner swapped the 6.9 diesel out for a 460. I bought the truck to restore later so I am not driving it at this time. I would have to agree with the previous posters about rebuilding the 6.9 or buying a replacement 6.9 instead of swapping. Of course, I`m partial to my 6.9`s. Like 82 said, it`s all about you and what you want. Where are you located? I have everything you need to make the swap if you have your mind made up on doing it. I would love to do a trade to get all of the 6.9 stuff back into this other truck I have. Good luck.
