Well, I havent cleaned the engine on my Scab yet, but I am thinking of it for tomorrow. But with my last truck being a show truck, I had to do it often. Here are the precautions I took with it. I'll write N/A beside the things that shouldn't matter on F-150's.
1.) Cover plug wires and plug holes with plastic bag. N/A
2.) Cover the fuse block with bag.
3.) Cover the air filter with bag.
4.) Spray on greased lightning, simple green, orange blast, or equivalent very liberally & let sit for about five minutes. (Dont let it dry.)
5.) Spray again and take a brush and rag to all the hard to reach places.
6.) Hose off all cleaners carefully avoiding all covered areas.
7.) Wipe down fuse box, etc... with damp rag soaked in cleaner and then wipe clean with a wet rag.
8.) Use some sort of dressing on hoses that doesnt damage them.
9.) Towel dry all places within reach.
10.) Use back to black on plastic pieces.
11.) Stand back and admire.
Make sure to do this when the engine is cold. And once dry, crank the engine to make sure everything's ok. I'll take some pics of mine tomorrow when I clean it.
i have a 96 and all i did was cover up the idler pulley with a plastic bag, then i sprayed down everything i could see, with castrol super clean. let it sit for a few minutes, spray it off, it works underbody and on tires real good too. but watch out for paint. maybe the spots were just covered in dirt, but after i cleaned it i noticed a few places that the paint was missing. just dont rub real hard on the painted surfaces(if its that dirty), and you should be fine.
I don't cover anything either, I just spray it with Simple Green, let it sit, and hose it off. After it is dry, I follow up with about 1/2 can of tire foam... awesome results!
i use to wipe as much as i could with armorall but there were places you couldnt really get to and it took a while to get the job done. but this will fix both those problems.
