I have a 92 Ranger 2 wheel drive with a broken rear spring. Anyone have any advice on the best way to get the bolts out of the shackels and front spring mount.
Which spring is broken? If the main leaf is not broken, there is no need to replace it. Just leave it in place and replace just the broken leaf. You can buy leaves one at a time. You will need to buy a new center bolt and lock nut. Those have to be cut to length after you tighten it up. If you do have to replace the main leaf, try lots of WD-40 or PB Blaster and a great big hammer. (Put the nut back on until it is flush before you beat on the bolt so you wont "bugger" the threads up) Spray it real good and let it sit for a few hours first. Maybe spray it several times and leave it sit over night. A little heat from an acetylene torch sometimes is needed. (Be careful not to set the rubber bushings on fire.) A good air wrench will make the job go easier too. I have replaced springs and only had to take the bolt out of the eye of the spring, I left the shackle alone. (Dont create work for yourself.) If you are replacing the entire set, you probably should think about doing both sides, even if there are no broken leaves on the other side. This is especially important if you have a lot of miles on your truck. When you replace just one side, it tends to make it sit higher on that side because the springs on the other side tend to sag with age. Good Luck. Dan
Thanks Dan for the Information. I got into it this afternoon and did just as you said-- it worked out great, that is I just replaced the broken leaf. thanks again. The truck has 204000 miles on it and still runs good enough to fix
