My truck has been stalling on start up and when it's idling. The site FAQ says that this maybe related to a bad Idle Air Control Value. Is there a method of testing the IAC to see if it's the problem. I apperciate any assistance.
I have a 97 f150 4.6. My manual says to check the input side of the connector and ensure there is 10.5 to 12.5 vdc present. Check this with the ignition on, but not running. If the proper input is there turn the key off and check the connection terminals on the valve itself for a resistance reading between the terminals. The reading should be between 6.0 to 13.0 ohms. If that is good, check each terminal to the metal housing to make sure there is not short/ground from the electronic internals to the metal housing. The reading should be 10,000 ohms or infinity. If that is all good check the pintle or mechanical part of the valve for carbon. I just checked mine and all the voltage and resistance readings were good. I cleaned out the pintle or mechanical part of the valve with brake cleaner. Make sure you dont soak the entire part as there are electronic components within. My truck now runs and idles smoother.
The IAC Valves usually get stuck because of the carbon build up. You can clean it, but it is at best a temporary fix. If you clean it (throttle body cleaner and let it dry out) and the truck then runs better. I would then go buy a new one to replace it.. $50-$60 I think..
Thanks for the help. I was able to find the part locally and replace it in about 15 mins. The inside was completely covered by carbon build up and the actuator was stuck.
Take the 5.4 Liter plastic cover off the top of the engine. There should be 3 bolts. Look towards the back of the engine near the fire wall and you should see the IAC. There are two bolts for the IAC and the heads face the cab. Only takes about 15 min once you locate the IAC. Good Luck
Dalton, I got it changed this morning. A little tight getting to it and getting the electrical plug off, but its done and the truck seems to run fine, Thank God for those ractching box end wrenches or I don't know if I could have done it. Thanks for your help.
