Removing factory rivets?

Ok,
So I want to pull put the remaining pieces of my trans crossmember, PO just cut the middle of it out. What is the best way to get the rivets out of the frame? I've ground off the rivet heads flush with the frame. Heat and BFH? Drill out? Other?

Thanks for the info,

Ron

I've never ground the rivets, it makes it difficult. I use a welding torch, heat up the rivet and use an air impact chisel. Takes some work, but works.

As imlowr said, air impact works well to drive them out and some heat will only make it easier. They can be tuff !

I ground the heads off with my 4-1/2" angle grinder and then drove them out with a drift and a BFH. I only used heat (propane) on the stubborn ones. I would say it only took me 2 minutes per rivit using this method and you get a nice clean result.

I just took the tranny crossmember out of mine. Ground the rivits flush to the frame, drilled the rivit all the way to the crossmember and then it fell out. Doesn't take much time at all with a 7" grinder and a nice sharp bit.

Ron,

Did mine the hard way...a BFH and a cold chisel. Since the center of yours is already cut out it will be easier to remove. I have since purchased a 4 inch grinder and cut off wheel. If I had it to do over, that's what I would use now. After I ground the heads off I just drove them out with a punch...did not have to use heat...

We tried both methods (drill/chisel vs. grinding). We found it easier to drill out the rivet head with a bit about the size of the hole the rivet is in. Drill down even with the frame. Take a cold chisel and lop the head off.
