my 04 6.0 is at the dealer right now but they cant find any thing wrong with it. a couple of times now on me it took 9 trys to start it before it would finally fire up dealer says it did not through a code and has not done it to them yet so they are going to replace my rear main seal thats been leaking and i should get it back thursday. any one else had this problem ?
Always get a second opinion when it comes to something like this. Go to another dealer, make sure they have a certified diesel tech, and have them look at it. Because one too many times, the dealership has gas engine techs looking at diesel engines and misdiagnosing.

How do they know the rear main is leaking? Did they put dye in the oil and let you run around in it for a week and then do a black light test to see where the oil is coming from. I had my rear main done and it took 1/2 day!
On the no/start or hard start their service manuals have a diagnostic chart that tells them what to check. It doesn't need to throw a code. I would speak to the service manager. If you don't get satisfaction, go somewhere else. If you are getting this from a service advisor, just tell them to have the certified diesel tech check it out.
99% of the hard starting issues with these trucks are either a glow plug/glow plug controller/glow plug wiring harness or an injection control pressure issue...sounds to me like, if it is as hard to start as you are making sound, it is probably an injection control pressure issue. Have them start with the ICP sensor and IPR, and work their way down from there. IMO.

You would be amazed at the number of techs who go by NOTHING but codes. I know some who will begin a service procedure by scanning for codes; if none show up, he will simply say theres nothing he can do. I am sometimes curious if some of them have ever even heard of a diagnostic flow chart
I know we make fun of parts changers here alot...but in some cases, especially with these vehicles, guessing and changing is sometimes the answer with parts that are difficult to diagnose in proper function.
