I am a new owner of a 351m and it seems to be a good motor besides the fact it's got a very apperant lack of grunt and snort power. My 360 has only an extra .050 of bore diameter and a dead piston but it could run circles around the 351m.
What causes the 351m to dog it? Is it the heads, cam or intake? What about smog equipment?
The cam is retarded 4 degrees at the timing gears. Just that change will help alot. Most after market timing sets I have seen give you the option of setting the timing straight up, advanced or retarded. It was done as part of the smog stuff.
NOt so fast. lOOk at some of these articles. You can make quite an engine out of the m motor. I did mine, made it a 400 with some mods for less than it will cost you to swap the 460 in, Plus the 460 will put about another 150 pounds up front.
The 351m is a 78 model, I don't think it's worth building when I can drop a 460 in for under 1000$$ probaly..... Also got some 390's kicking around too.
Would be a little nicer having a 460/390 in a 1 tonne dually flatdeck with overload springs
If you wish to change engines, putting the 460 in your truck will be MUCH simpler than going to the 390.
The 351M and the 460 share the same bellhousing bolt pattern, for one thing. There is less to change and, thus, less expense, if you want to use the 460.
Good luck on it, no matter if you rebuild the 351M or install the 460! I hope it performs and/or does the work you want and need it to do!
