Switch 15w40->5w40 for winter?

Living in South Central Texas and running 15w40 in my 302 of 122,000 miles. I'll be spending this winter in Ohio. I realize the 15w is a little thick for a mid-west winter. The motor seems to like the 40 weight over the 30, therefore not really considering the 10w30.
Already uses a little oil. I'll be driving up in a month or so. I thought about switching over to the 5w40 before the drive up (1200 miles), and carrying on thru the winter.
How much faster you think I would use oil with the synthetic?
Would It be better to leave the 15w40 in for the trip?
Do you also think the 15w40 would be too thick for those rare 0* start ups?

Thanks

I would stay with the 15W40 peppy . When I lived in Michigan ( 9 months of winter 3 months of poor sleding ) , I ran 15W40 all year long in my PSD and my Freightliner ( Cat ) and never had a problem . With 122,00 on the motor i wouldn't sitch to a synthetic ether , because of the cleaning ability of the synthetics it will leak out where petrolium based oil won't . And it's way too expensive to let it leak out on the ground ! Where in Ohio are you going ?

I think the switch would be a wise one. I run 10w30 in my explorer, and on a below zero morning I can hear the oil pump bypass buzzing when I first start it. I know that oil isn't going anywhere fast.

If your engine doesn't leak now with the 15w40 it wont leak with 5w40. The diesel rated oils have so many detergents in 'em anyway that if it was going to leak it would already be doing so. You may use (burn) a little more since it will be thinner when cold. I dont think it will be a noticeable amount though.

if you use synthetic you need to stay with synthetic. when you switch back and forth between dino and synthetic you mess up the oil clearences and such, thus causeing more wear.

Heading to Cincinnati. Cant wait to enjoy the winter. Hope theres always snow on the ground. A foot or more frequently inwhich to play.
Right.....not gonna happen.
I knew the mid-west......snow....immediatly ruined by rain.

Been running the Delo 400 15w40. Cant find the Delo in 10w30. I had considered RotellaT in 10w30 or Delo or Rotella 5w40. Still

Glad I have a month to figure it out.

I dont know how it goes in Ohio, but here in Iowa, it's like this:

1. Rain
2. Wind
3. Freeze + Rain
4. Snow
5. Snow
6. Snow
7. Cold

Normally it doesn't really snow and stick until about the beginning of January.

Go with a good qualith 10w40 blend, like Valvoline Durablend or Maxlife.

You should definately NOT go with a light weight Oil for the winters in Ohio. My Ranger uses 10w-30 in the Winter and 5w-20 in the summer. Just use a higher quality oil, and not that crap you get from the Diamond Shamrock (or Texaco)

Wow.....okay.......thats new news. Thin in summer, thick in winter. I always thought it was the other way around.

I think the 5w20 is so thin it would freeze.

peppy, talk to your friends in ohio and see what they run. up here in the dakotas, 10w30 in summer-5w30 in winter is the norm for an early '90s engine. i don't think i have seen 5w40 , but i have not looked for it. the colder it is the thinner you shoud want your oil at start up so it gets thru your engine quicker. light oil for winter, litttle thicker for summer. more important is too have the ole girl tuned up well. the cold air will bring out any weekness...battery, cables, plugs, wires...ect. take a look at high milage oils, they might slow down your usage.
