5w-40 Syn for the winter months only?

Can I change from my normal 15w-40 oil to 5w-40 Syn. just for the winter months and change back to 15w40 after winter when the temps start rising again?Would that hurt the truck switching back and fourth?

I want to do it just for the winter months so I can keep the cost of oil changes down.I don't have any cold start issues I just want to make it easier on the truck. If ya don't think it's the best idea changing back and forth every year I'll just stick with the 15w-40 year round. What do you think?

Won't hurt it at all. The 5W40 is also excellant for hot climates thus the 40 rating

If you change back and forth dont do it immediatly do an oil change half-n-half at least once, dont just change from reg oil to strait synthetic and back

I am changing over to Rotella T 5 40 synthetic permanently because I do a lot of short trips.

Most of the wear happen when you start before the oil pump delivers pressure.

Nothing wrong with just leaving it in there all year.

Also, be aware that whenever you switch, you are ALWAYS mixing oil. the system holds 18 quarts, and you only add 14 to 15 in an oil change.

I have switched back and forth and never seen a problem.

Why wouldn't you run it all the time? 15W40 is usually dino oil and not synthetic. The 5W40 synthetic will almost certainly give you better protection during hot summers.

What is the situation with regard to extending oil change intervals with synthetic oil?

Should I stick with the 7,000 mile Ford advice?

Ditto on the 5w40 year round. As for switching back and forth....never heard of how it could be a problem...the problem will come from not changing frequently and using improper filters.

I would like too run it all the time.I don't because it would run me about about $60-65 dollars more than dino.I know it's cheap insurance to have good oil.I might try switching this oil change and see how it runs during this winter and decide from their.

Thanks for all your guy's input!

It all depends on how long you want to keep your truck. You shouldn't have any problems with the dino oil. Synthetic is proven to greatly reduce engine wear during starting and at high temps. I change mine every 5000 km. If you extend your service intervals, then you are just reducing your number oil changes and aren't really any further ahead when it comes to making your engine last longer. If you want your engine to last and intend on keeping the truck, then keep the regular service intervals and use synthetic. Yes it does cost more, but in some ways it's true that you get what you pay for.

PS: I put on 80,000 km in less than 8 months. That's an oil change every three weeks - yes, the cost does hurt.

I switched to 5w-40 and I will never go back to 15w-40 it is like night and day difference running the synthetic oil.

I used it for most of the summer and it made the 6.0 far far better have to see what it does this winter.

You also have less coking with synthetic as in your turbo where life gets super hot.
