In 2006 low sulfur deisel is supposed to be available in the states and then expect to see more diesels and maybe even in hybrids. The modern european rail diesels are fantastic! I rented a 1.3 L. Diesel and did not realize it was a diesel until the second day i had it! 600 miles per tank (50+mpg) and pretty fast to boot! I promissed myself i would not buy a new car until i can get something like that in the states. Only vw has something close now but not in a wagon. So here i wait....
I'm stationed in the Netherlands, people here pay between 5-6 US dollars a gallon, us lucky soldiers get gas at about $2.45 US per gallon. All the cars are little. Diesels are everywhere. An Audi S4 just isn't an S4 with a 2 liter diesel in it. The Dutch think my Taurus is huge, the 3 liter 24 valve too expensive to run. I thought I could sell my 5.8 liter mustang over here before I left but I doubt it with the gas prices.
I am hoping that hybrid technology will save us from driving some of the very small odd looking cars that are common over here. Have you ever seen a Renault Twingo? If 5 dollar gas hits the US it'll be Hybrids that save us from the Twingo, God willing.

I was recently in Germany and got to drive a 1.4l Turbo diesel Ford Fiesta (next size down from a Focus), I sat on 130mph on the Autobahn....
and it still had a bit left - not much though...

Hey oft, have you diven the BMW 535d???
Also while in Germany I had the fortune to take one for a spin around the block...
Man that thing was fast, 0-60 in 6 flat in a fullsize sedan with only a 3l diesel...
I would not be surprised if the S4 comes out in a diesel soon.
I sold my Lincoln Towncar May 2003 and purchased a new 2003 Toyota Echo with A/T. We have driven it 19,000 miles so far in mixed driving and have averaged just over 42 MPG.
They have a diesel A4 over here. And I have seen the 535d but have not driven one. I just cant see myself buying a diesel until they can make them sound good.
Small cars are a good thing over here (Europe), Roads are small and if you do have a fenderbender, you probably are not going to run into someone driving an Expedition. I have a Taurus here as well as a Mustang (I left my F100 in storage), If I hit some of these European cars w/either of what I drive, No one would be walking away from the other car. Until we ban huge SUV's, or make our streets in the US half as wide as they are, or move our cities closer together, I can't see us driving cars that are this small. Unless gas prices hit 5+ bucks. Then it'll be hybrids or that goofy looking Twingo I was talking about.

Low sulphur diesel has been in the states since at least 1994.
If Low-Sulfer Diesel has been available here since '94 then what was mentioned was Ulrta Low Sulfer to be introduced in 2006. I read about some test Vehicals running Diesels useing this new Fuel...they emit fewer emissions then the cleanest gasoline engines...and great mpg to boot.
Just make sure you diesel guys start using lubricity additives for sure when the ULSD does come out. Some companies are already at that level, just not required to be. The current limit is 500 PPM, ULSD will be 15 PPM max.
I don't think a hybrid will work for me up here in the north.....that and I do alot of highway miles, But I can't wait for some smaller diesels to be put in mid size vehicles. I pray daily that ford will put a small diesel in an F-150 soon
