My husband is looking to replace his Durango with a more fuel efficient vehicle since his new job requires a lot of driving. He needs 4wd/awd so we're considering something like an Escape or a Subaru. He's 6'3" so the Subaru may be a bit tight for him having to get in and out of all day. The Escape is also more like a scaled down version of the Durango that he loves.
There is an 05 Escape Hybrid for sale nearby and the dealer, who buys from the auto wholesale supply place I work for, said it was fantastic, he always tries to keep one in stock.
My FIL says he's heard that Hybrids are very expensive to fix. We do pretty much all our own work and he's found my Ranger pretty easy to work on so it seems it would almost be the same.
Any advice on whether the Hybrid is something that we should try or stay away from repairwise?
It is certainly true that the hybrid Escapes have some very expensive parts - batteries, brake master cylinder, CVT, etc. But, weigh that against the reliability of these vehicles.
I bought both of mine in 2005 and have had no real repair issues except for a battery wiring issue repaired under a voluntary recall. The rest of the repairs were for items not related to the drivetrain - power lock motor, A/C condensor, front end stuff.
The maintenance on the hybrids is really no different than any other vehicle except for a battery filter the '05 has that needs to be changed every 10-20k miles.
I have been completely satisfied with both of mine. Lifetime mileage in both is between 33 and 34 mpg.
