I am considering buying a 1990 Bronco 2 XL.2.9,automatic,4wd.They want $1200 for it.I`m believe the mileage is 81000,because it looks like it could be,but could also be 181k.Are there any known problems with the drive-line in these, like eng/trannny/axles? The lifters tick, but I know thats normal because of it having solid lifters.Going to take it for a ride tomorrow. How long do the engines and,or trannys usually last in these? Any help appreciated.
The 2.9 engine heads are prone to crack. Have the cooling system pressure checked. I bought a 98 with 132,000 miles that had cracked heads. I put on World Casting improved heads. My son has a 88 with original heads, never been rebuilt that he bought with 100,000 miles. IT now has 180,000 miles and running great except for oil leaks and a failed computer which he repaired.
Went and looked at it.Ran ok until it warmed up good.Oil pressure dropped, engine started missing, and tranny started slipping.POS.Guy tried telling me to let it cool down, after 20 min though????? Barely got it back there, died as i was pulling it in.
I have a 90 Bronco II with 210,000 and still going strong. I bought it in 94 with 67000 miles. The only thing I have done to it was a transmission replacement at 171000 miles. This vehicle has been great.
The problem with the one you looked at is that you don't know how hard those miles have been put on it. But $1200 isn't bad for a 4X4 especially if it has a good body and interior. If the 2.9 goes in my Bronco I would love to transplant a 4.0 from an Explorer.
Heads cracking on the 2.9 is a problem in the first years of the engine, usually 86 trough 88. My 88 ranger had problems with it's 2.9, not the heads but the lifters making a horrible sound. The 90 makes no such noises even at 210,000 miles.
I should have said 89 & not 98 for my Bronco II in message # 2. The 88,89&90 heads are the same. The World Casting heats I put on are 5 lbs heavier & you can see where they added more material. They machine shops in the Omaha, NE area all say the 2.9 heads are prone to crack. You are lucky if they don't.
