89 f250 with 460.my converter is shot.was going to replace with straight pipe but was told then the o2 sensor would not read correctly because there would not be enough back pressure for the sensor to read exhaust properly because of where ford mounted the o2 fitting in the down pipe.is this true?thank you in advance----tony----
ive gutted out cats before and not had any problems, never a motor as big as a 460. biggest was a 350. as long as the sensor is before the cat i think you would be o.k.
It is only 'good' for awhile. Son's T-bird 3.8 went thru hollowed out cats and straight pipe. Sounded good for awhile now it blats to much and fuel mileage dropped(no codes). Going to put on some high flow cats and leave the straight pipes.
68torino, the reason it was good at begining was probly inperfection in the gutting, it slowed the air enough for back pressure to be slightly present, which is required for an engine to run with good economy. as it was driven, carbon built up on the imperfections, and smoothed them out. Causing it reduce all the backpressure. i think lol. You should be alright with the high flow cats.
I think new cats are the way to go. For a 3.8 it sounded great people thought he had a blower on it. No it blats so much it sounds like a cross between a chev and a ricer. Poor 'bird.
