Cool 04 surging under heavy load

I have an 04 6.0 6spd that acts strange when pulling heavy loads.
The scenario:
I am starting from 0mph pulling up a slight grade, the truck pulls through L, 1st, and 2nd with no problems. When i shift into 3rd the rpm's drop to 1600 or so and if i put the pedal to the floor the truck will immediately begin jumping until it reaches 2000rpms where everything settles out and never does it again. This happens in every gear above 2nd and will do it even if i am already in 3rd and begin climbing up the rpms.

Any thoughts!!?

If you have the chance to read through some of the other topics, you will probably find a lot of similar descriptions in the postings, but oddly enough, the fixes that are working are different.

In my case, I have an '04 6.0L PSD King Ranch that was doing wonderfully UNTIL I started towing my trailer with it at the 14k mile marker over the last 4th of July weekend. I started doing a bunch of weird stuff, but the most prevalent problem was the surging, which was INCREDIBLY annoying! It was surging under a load, under no load, it did not descrimate. The worst part was taking it to the dealer to show them what it was doing to me, except it would not do it for them. Then it would be fine for a couple of days, but the troubles would start up again and the "check engine" light would come on... I started calling this little ghost "Christine" (after the Stephen King movie).

To make a long story short, I think the truck finally gave up the ghost when I got it back last Friday. I have put 900 miles on it since then and it looks like everything is back to normal. The final fix was an "experimental" MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) sensor from the Factory Area Rep.

The point here is this: Work with your dealer (or the dealer you prefer) to get a fix. This will obviously take a little effort on your side, but if you like the truck enough, I guarantee that it will all be worth it.

Good Luck!

Jet-A User,

Thanks for the reply. I did search through for this topic amd it sounded like most of the surging was happenning all the time like you said, and also mostly on autos. I was not sure if that was because most are autos or if it acted differently with a 6spd. The MAP sounds like it could be a good guess, it seems like it starts surging after boost is built up. I am having the same problem as you, when i take it to the dealer it won't do it, i guess i will have to bring along my loaded trailer to show them It would probably help me to get a boost gauge. Thanks for your help!!

BTW, how do you upload pictures into your gallery?

On my '04, I installed the Edge Products' "Juice" performance module and "Attitude" controller/display. The Attitude gives me the ability to monitor the EGT, RPM, Boost (in. Hg), and "% Boost Backdown" digitally all at the same time. I have the EGT probe installed on the 2nd cyclinder header back from the front on the driver's side (the factory probe is on the 1st) - it was the easiest place to put it. Additioanlly, I have also installed a 4" turbo-back exhaust system with a 5" chromed tip from Magnaflow.

I usually leave the Juice on the 1st or 2nd setting for power and I watch the Attitude continuously. Of coarse, I am a professionally trained gauge-watcher (read: pilot), and there still isn't enough gauges in my truck for my taste, but I am working on that...

As for the "pictures" next to our names, you can go the the "User CP" to edit your info. From there you want to go to "Edit Avatar" and upload your picture. There are some pretty strict limits (60x60 pixels or 8.0Kb, whichever is less).

Hope all this helps! Enjoy! These are a really great group of guys with tons of useful (and mostly true) information.
