The 48 trucks were striped with the red lines on the grille from the factory. The rims were also done. I've seen some original rims with the dual stripe, but not the grille. In 49 they eliminated the striping.
I have a 1949 F-5 with 5,000 miles on it, and it's in virtually original condition. It was an early model year '49 with the silver grille that has twin red pin stripes on it. Apparently Ford switched over from stainless steel to these silver/red striped grilles sometime during the '48 model year. Then when the '49 production started up, they continued to use these red striped units, until the supply was exhausted.
I believe that there's a picture of the grille on a restored truck in one of the Ford books that I have. I'll try to scan it later this evening and post it.
